Bottle from Cooperative Supermarket, Hebden Bridge. Black with no head. Its heavy liquor strength impacts greatly on both its aroma and taste, and subdues most of what could be called chocolate, although its smoothness in the palate is perhaps its most associated characteristic with its name. There is of course a mix of dark and roasted malts with some chocolate evident in its aftertaste.

Cask at the Pup and Duckling, Solihull. Poured a clear dark brown with a creamy frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, smoky, charcoal, light vanilla. The flavour is moderate liquorice bitter with a smooth, dry, roasty, coffee, liquorice, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Expected more vanilla I have to say.
