Very slightly hazed chestnut, cream-coloured, thick head, nearly solid looking. Bit of vanilla, rhubarb, and lactic acid in the nose! Smells like a Flemish Oud bruin. Iron, lactic acid, dark(er) malts and British hops. If it weren’t for those last - well, even then... Still a little vanilla, somewhere. Retronasal some brown candi sugar. Light body, oxidysed (the iron), very faint acid burn. In the nose, I suggested Oud bruin. Having drunk it, I know - this is a more authentic Saison than nearly everything that goes under that name today in Wallonia. Now SilkT is going to ask me for the BBD - I searched, but couln’t make head nor tails from it. It sure LOOKS new, and was recently purchased. I LOVE IT - I’m getting flashes of Saison de Voisin d’antan...

Bottled March 16 2003. Thanks Heemer77! This beer, going on 2 years of age, pours a pitch black with a small dark tan head, that rapidly disipates. Aroma, as it decants in to my tulip, pours forth with a strong sense of smoke and roast. Smells like pepper crusted bacon with a pot of old black coffee sitting next to it. First thing I note upon sipping is the slight looseness of body, but it holds up a medium to medium-fullness throughout the bottle, not gaining any thinness as it warms or finishes. Aside from the body, let’s talk flavor, because this beer has plenty of it. One of the best roasted flavors I’ve encountered yet. Somehow, almost all the expected astringency and bitterness has vanished, leaving a delightful black coffee and anise flavor. Combining with the malted oats, it has a chewy, very mellow and oatmeal-like flavor. Sweetness is left in the background, but there is no lack of balance here. Finally, I’ll end my rambling with a discussion of something that I love to see, maybe more than anything, in a beer: hops done right. Wow. It’s like the fuggles they use were destined for this beer. They create a rich, yet somehow still green, earthy, smokey and only lightly bitter sensation through the middle of the body, ending on a juicy, tree sap sort of note. Sticky and just present enough without getting in the way. They are just one of the many elements of this beer, rather than being the element. This beer reminds me much of both Bell’s Porter and Kzoo Stout. I’m really getting to like these top tier beers listed in the "Stout" style.

A hazy orange beer with a fine white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of yeast and fruit. The flavor is very yesty and malty on a slight sour background before a good hoppy end sets in.

[Bottle] A hazy amber beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of coriander and yeast and so is the flavor.I should think this was a Belgian beer - or atleast a Belgian Ale.

500 ml bottle conditioned real ale. Enormous thick tan head. Pitch black colour, even when held to the light. Very possibly the darkest beer in the world. Wonderful aroma of roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate, oak and cedarwood. Flavour is all smoked and heavily roasted malts and oats. A world class stout.

Back Street Heroes Beer! Hazy orange brown color and big steady white head and some lace. Aroma is bit musty, slightly like rubber gloves. Bitter hops strike into your mouth. Very fullbodied and bitter with long finish. One extra point for nice label :) This beer reminds me about De Koninck Winterkoninck - this is just better.

The aroma is of coffee, chocolate, prunes, and slightly sour. The color is black and it has a small chocolate brown head. The flavor is of roasted malt, coffee, and bitter chocolate. Before it ends on a fanatastic malt bitter note combined with coffee. The body is very soft. It is not thin, but I had hoped for more power.

Blond color; almost no head. Deep chocolate and liquorice aroma. Thick, oily, rich; malt, liquorice, roasted malt. Strong and long final. Lovely and powerful, close to the border with Imperial Stouts.

Slightly hazy copper colour with a dense soapy tall off-white head. Aroma of slightly roasted malt, bubble gum and a slight english hoppiness. Medium to Full-bodied; Sweet tastes entralled in potent hoppiness that lasts for quite a while. Aftertaste bittered from the hops, but not overly so. Overall, a good english-styled IPA-owrth trying if you can find it! I bought this 16 ounce bottle at Chevy Chase Wine & Liquor in Washington and sampled it on 30-November-2003.

Bottled. Pale golden with firm head. Flowery smokey nose. Firm, rounded soft maltiness with a body and mouthfeel reminding of a good German Helles, even though English barley is used here. Quite bitter finish witha hint of tobacco. A discrete, introvert beer, very pleasant throughtout, never pushy or intimidating, nor average or boring.
