Description
Inspired by norse mythology, 3 ravens tells the story of an unlikely trio: hugin, munin & jack. Hugin and munin were ravens loyal to the god odin who were sent on a quest to find the secret to human happiness. Jack, the third raven was sent by loki to rattle ’em with riddles. The three ravens forming to combine sight, knowledge and creativity to concoct a magic potion is much like our own story: a group of friends—banding together in their thornbury basement—to create unique australian beers.

Bottle. Pours black and thick. Oaky nose. Big flavour explosion with almost raisiny sweetness offset by vanilla and woodiness. A little more alcohol burn than I’d hoped, but luscious nevertheless.

Bottle. Black with a tan head that’s soon less than a coat but never quite gives up. Somewhat boozy aroma of peaty whisky, vanilla, chocolate, dark berries/ shiraz. Quite silky textured, lowish carbonation. Lots of chocolate and (nice) vanilla with a big waft of whisky and smoke at the rather bitter finish. Some berries and oak, vanilla gets a bit lost after a time. A little harsh for me at the end (maybe a bit burnt plasticy too) but perhaps that will settle in a while. Recommended temp was 8-10C, I started at 11 and liked it much more as it warmed and a little more sweetness became evident.

[backlog] 13-02-15 / bottle at The Castle Pub, Melbourne. I started rating my beers with Untappd and a few basic notes. Now I want to rate them on ratebeer. So my rating sometimes lack some information. Just ignore it, it is for my personal statistics. Untappd-Rating 3/5

Bottle does NOT say it is a pale ale. 330ml bottle into glass. Super malty nose turning to caramel chocolates. Opaque golden colour with tan head. Some lacing. Tastes standard light bitter. Short bitter/caramel finish. Really nice. But it’s all in the nose, really.

Pours brown with a very small fading head.Nose shows caramelized bananas, brown sugar, bready malt, golden syrup and sultanas along with a soft woody a vinuous character.Similar sweet flavours, almost cloying. Lots of brown sugar and golden syrup along side some booze and raisins.Moderately low carbonation, could be higher/creamier.

Bottle, 10C - maybe a little better as it warmed. Fairly dark brown with a good coat of beige head that fades to the rim. Aroma of dried banana, figs, raisins, bready/ toasted malt, some herbs. Initial banana hit dissipates a bit after a while (good for non banana-liker me). Fairly sweet, a little syrupy, intense dried fruit, sherry notes of course. Dries out a little at the end with gentle bitterness. No overt alcohol. Very good; powerful fruit flavours held together well without being cloying or boozy.

@ Josie Bones, June 2013. Light amber, big head. The aroma has quite a bit of smoke, leaning towards peat smoke. Massive peaty, ardbeggy smoke, abd quite a lot of malt (sweet pale) in this. A big and assertive, fairly sweet thing.

A smoky aroma as advertised, but there’s also citrus, a little chocolate and some apricot. The flavour is quite sweet with some citrus and caramel. I’ve no idea what makes a good smoked beer, but it’s a nice beer - good body and length - even if it’s not quite my cup of tea.

Dark brown. Thin head. Aroma has a bit of roast and a bit of fruitiness. Taste is light, mostly chocolate, hint of nuttiness. A bit less body and hop and you’d have a good mild. Re-rate in 2015 found it thinner and less interesting, resulting in a reduced score.
