Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.
We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.
In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

100th Red Duck rating. Hope they continue to be be seen in Melbourne. Can. Red brown with a 2 cm+ off white head that lasts well. Rumbling malty aroma with sticky breadcrust, grass, some baked fruit. Rich and malty but not very sweet with somewhat peppery bitterness. Really satisfying for 5.2%.

Can. A tan head fails to form atop black. Big roasty and whisky aroma with mocha, vanilla. Bittersweet with sweetmeats, doughy bread, mocha, almost brash whisky. Would guess actual coffee, wouldn't guess chocolate; barrel is presumably whisky and mostly high caramel, vanilla and light oak notes that don't get in the way of firm finishing bitterness. Assertive where the name suggests something moodier - if I see another I'd give it 'til next winter, but it's pretty good now.

Can says West Coast IPA but come on, it's 8.4%. Amber with a good fluffy cm of white head. Breadcrust, pine, grapefruit aroma with some subtle candied papaya and mint. The tropical notes are a little more prominent in the taste, which is first a bit sweet and then bitter with some minor overt boozy notes.

First sighting of Red Duck in Melbourne for some years. Can. Amber with a coat of beige head. Aroma of toffee, hints of chocolate, light spices. Medium bodied. Moderately sweet with ESB-like bitterness imposing itself nicely.

Can. Another one from Cellarbrations Daylesford - happy to see a Red Duck, they have pretty much disappeared in town. Very dark brown with a fat coat of tan head that's soon at the rim. Aroma of bread and spice with roast and mocha behind. Rich but dryish with some stewed fruit as well as roast and mocha before moderate bitterness. Pretty good.

Picked this one up at the brewery on a lark and expected to hate it. It turned out to be a ripper. Sarsparilla is more prominent in the aroma than the aniseed. There's also biscuit, bread, lemon. I get much more of the licorice in the mouth, but it's nicely balanced with some caramel, bread and cocoa. I really enjoyed this one, and would definitely go back.

Aromas of guava, marshmallow, cream and lemon. A nice body typical of an IPL with lots of grapefruit and pine needle hops. A really enjoyable IPL.
