Brasserie Skumenn
Microbrewery in Cesson-Sévigné (Ille-et-Vilaine), Bretagne, France 🇫🇷
Established in 2015
The history of the Skumenn brewery begins in 2012, on the other side of the world: in India. During a journey at the foot of the Himalayas, Stéphane, one of the 2 founders, has a revelation after reading a book by John Seymour "The complete book of self sufficiency". He would turn his passion into his profession: brewing craft beer. He shared his thoughts the next day with his long-time friend Thomas, also from the Rennes region. The idea caught on and, once back in France, Stéphane started their first brews with Thomas. Once their university degrees in hand (management for Stéphane, communication for Thomas), a brewing training in La Rochelle and several amateur brews, they decide to move up a gear: the “Skumenn” project (Ecume in Breton) was born. In August 2015, it was only natural for our 2 young 28-year-old brewers to settle in their native region, in Brittany, more precisely in Acigné, a town adjacent to Rennes. Today the brewery has integrated a third brewer, Jules.

Bottle split at home with and thanks to James, 07/12/17. Hazed golden orange with a decent egg shell white head. Nose is orange peel, citric tinged straw, light plastic, floral whisper. Taste comprises orange peel, breads, apricot jam, toasted malts, straw, lemon rind. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close dusted with earthy hop bitterness. OK ... not living up to my expectations of the style but not unpleasant.

Hazy light brown colour with big fluffy head. Aroma has some light smoke and caramel malt. Flavour is a little spicy and smokey. Later some resinous hop. Big on flavour but a few too mamy things going on.

Hazy amber with thin head. Aroma has lots of toasted malt sweetness. Flavour is well balanced. Toasted malts and floral hops. A bit light bodied but certainly a nice session beer.

Dark golden colour with fluffy head. Aroma has strong floral hop, almost perfumed. Flavour is similar but less intense not aided by fairly rough carbonation.

Bottle picked up from a bottle shop in Guerande, consumed at Camping Trezulien, Douarnenez, Saturday 17th June 2017 Pours hazy gold with a white head, soft in the mouth, a hoppy bite and good fruitiness, citrussy and with a light lemon edge. Wheatiness works well with the IPA characteristics, it’s pleasantly bitter throughout and with a nice dry finish. It’s a another good beer from Skumenn. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5

Bottle picked up from a bottle shop in Guerande, consumed at Camping Brehadour, Guerande, Loire Atlantique Friday 16th June 2017 Deep reddy amber and rather hazy with a sticky white head. Not sure how a 7.5%is a DIPA/Imperial IPA, it’s an IPA alright but the smokiness for me suggests a smoked beer to me. Smokey in both and aroma, Loz not a fan at all, but I am growing to like it having initially shunned it. The hops forge an interesting partnership with the smoked malts, it is fruity, it is hoppy but it’s really smokey as well. Interesting. A6 A3 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3
