Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Black with light brown head. Strong roasted barley notes, blackberries, coffee, toffee, earthy, licorice root. Itβs quite roasted bitter with solid sweet malts, dried berries, earthy βbrownβ notes and indeed a bit of salt. Full bodied. Pretty decent.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with late awakening, small, creamy, fading, tan head. Roasty dark malty aroma, notes of chocolate, couverture, hints of treacle, caramel, a touch of mocha. Taste is salty, spicy and roasty dark malty, notes of dark chocolate, couverture, mocha, salted liquorice; oily texture, lingering spicy finish. Slightly overspiced.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, mocha, caramel, liquorice, Belgian chocolate. Flavour is medium sweet, roasted malts, caramel, liquorice, just a tiny touch of the promised sea salt, some chocolate, bitter finish. Medium bodied, slick, hides the alcohol well. Good.

Liquorice stout from one of the countless new Dutch craft brewers (this one in Bussum), bottle from Plan B in Rotterdam. Creamy, very regular, dense, yellowish mocha beige, stable head, black robe with chestnut brown edges only visible for a few millimeters off the edge - looks perfect for the style. Aroma of indeed dry liquorice candy and 'drop', wet leather, toasted walnuts, bitter chocolate, coffee grounds, old dried plums, tea bags, bayleaf, black pepper, nutmeg, dry earth, autumn leaves, cigar ashes, minerals. Sweetish onset, old dry raisins, sourish edge as well as a very thin umami accent (cured meat), with a notably minerally side to it, even a tad metallic; thick, creamy mouthfeel, softish carb, but not quite as viscous as many other stouts of this strength. Thoroughly toasted nuts-like malt body with bitter chocolatey edges, while the metallic aspect continues to 'zing' at the edges, leading to a bittersweet, full finish, a tad ashy, very roasty and black coffeeish bitter, drenched in an explicit and absolutely unmistakable liquorice candy flavour. Herbal, slightly spicy hop bitter touch in the finish as well as the expected, well-positioned 'afterglow' of rum-like alcohol, but the liquorice flavour persists well beyond that. This is what it intends to be: a strong stout flavoured with liquorice, which fits in rather well; could have been thicker and more complex, but it is technically well done and delivers what it promises so this works fine for me.

Bottle @ cafe Goesting. Dark color, medium frothy head. Aroma of roast and licorice. In taste some caramel and dark chocolate. Bit thin texture, more a dark belgian strong ale or a quad.
