Description
Scotland has a deeply fascinating history when it comes to brewing and we wanted to pay homage to these roots when creating our name. Calton Hill Brewery in Edinburgh was the first brewery in Britain to create lager way back in 1835. The small suburb that the brewery called it’s home earned the name Cauld Toon as it sat directly in the in the cold shadow of Arthur’s Seat. Over time, this colloquially became Cal-ton. Carlton Hill could therefore be known as Cold Town Hill, and suddenly our name was born.

Can from Lidl. Clear gold, small white head. Raspberry, straw, dust, light custard aroma. Taste has a nice balance to it, raspberries to the fore, somewhat tangy, sweet vanilla, grass, drying mid-bitter finish. Medium bodied. Good.

330ml can from Beers of Europe. Clear gold with moderate sized white head. Fruity apricot and citrus aroma with some biscuit malt. Taste of biscuit, apricot and lime, herbal hop finish with some toasted grain. Light bodied, refreshing. In some ways quite a simple pale ale but very sessionable.

Can, gift from secret Santa. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of biscuit and grain. Flavour of metal and a sharp, hoppy finish. Thin to medium body with a watery texture. Light fizz. Sharp and astringent - not great. I couldn’t finish the can.

Re-rated and developed into chocolate cake.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - mat brown to black with a beige to tan head. Nose - herby and minty, some caramel. Taste - caramel or fudge, floral honey, syrup and still herbal. Palate - medium bodied, sweet finish. Overall - decent.

Can thanks to Ashton McCobb. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aromas of sherry, whisky and chocolate. Something oddly grassy on the nose too. Even menthol. Taste is more in the right ballpark. Boozy chocolate liqueur. It's alright.

Can from Lidl if I remember rightly. It pours hazy with a medium fluffy white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, ripe tropical, mango, peach, nectarine, papaya, splash of fanta, green, floury bread and cracker. The taste is crispy, dry, snappy, bitter, green, weedy, chalky, floury bread, peppery spice, pithy, zesty, bitter orange peel, tangerine, kumquat, apricot and some peach with a drying, slightly chalky finish. Average body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Decent enough. Wouldn't stand out in a crowd, but I had no problem drinking it all.

Can from Aldi Inverurie. It pours clear deep golden - amber with a quickly dissipating white head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, toasty grains, cereal, nuttiness, rather floral, pot pourri, melon and a twist of citrus. The is fairly crisp, dry, snappy, grassy, fragrant, floral, peppery spice, juniper, toasty grains, cereal, some pear and melon, and a twist of citrus. Finish is dry and floral. Average body and fine, prickly carbonation. Not as clean or as bright as I would like from this still. Drinks fine though.
