Description
The Brewery of Saint Mars of the Desert was inspired by the earliest “craft breweries” of Europe: that first generation making beers in disused 19th century breweries with a pioneering spirit, unmoving passion and an almost avant-garde creativity. We relocated from America to the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire to make this dream a reality and haven’t looked back.
As a very small two-and-a-half person brewery, making world class beers and sharing them fresh with the public is about all we have time for. But who needs more than that?

20/11/2019. Draught at Brew Club, Hackney. Poured very dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of dark fruit, sour berries, moderate roasted malt, vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Moderate sweetness, light bitterness, moderate tartness. Medium plus body, slight oily texture, average carbonation. Finish is fruity sour. Enjoyed this.

Bottle at home in Hackney - big thanks to G. Pours clear gold with a big, foamy white head that settles down quickly. Lovely bretty funk expression, soft acidity, nips of lemon, flaked wheat, a touch of bitter straw, dry biscuits. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Fairly clean and well balanced in the finish, some grass, more restrained funk, citric accents. Quite sound.

Can at home in Hackney - huge thanks to Big G. Pours lightly unclear orange-gold with a rich, frothy, mostly white head. This beer almost leans more toward the west coast than the east, but the straddling is wonderful. Lots of hearty citrus, ample resinous pine, supportive pale malts, mellow piney and rindy bitterness, touches of papaya. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Subtly warming finish, more rounded citrus fruit character, restrained gooey pine, orange and tangerine, continuous pale malts. Not at all gloopy or chalky. Glad to see beer like this in 2019.

Can. Hazy gold beer, good bubbly pale cream colour head. Airy and semi dry palate, decent fine minerally carbonation. Fluffy light malts, a nice level of creamy sweetness. Unfortunately, the hops don’t really build on this solid base. Piney hops and light and slightly candyish citrus and tropical fruits. Just wants more hop weight.

Can, picked up at the brewery. Also on tap at the brewery. Fully hazy, pale, yellow gold. Super dense, lasting, lacing, bright white head. Nose has fresh green hop leaf. Lime. Cut peach. Creamy malts. Some light phenols. Taste is super clean, lemon zest bitterness. A little dry. Soft, oaty sweetness on the lips. Light body. Fine, brisk carbonation. Lingering citrus bitterness to finish. SMOD are really dialling in these hoppy beers.

Tap, at the brewery. Deep, reddy amber colour. Light haze. Fine, dense, off white head. Nose has rich vine and stone fruit. Some bubblegum. Sweet, damp, roasty grain. Taste has a vinous sweetness. A little dry and estery. Some fruit bitterness. Toothsome mouthfeel. Fine carbonation. Lingering vine fruit bitterness to finish. Really good, and as easy drinking as a Sheffield brewed Quad can be.

Third, on tap at BrewDog Southampton. Shared with Finn. Dark reddish- brown body, dotted spots on the glass, and bubbles on the surface. Dark fruity smell, berry-fruits. Marmalade and raisin to the taste buds. Solid rounded, warming finish. Pretty nice in smaller amounts (Southampton 21.10.2019).

Keg at the St Albans beer shop, St Albans, Herts. A hazy golden/orange coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, orange, mango aroma. Tastes similar hoppy, orange, mango, bitter/sweet. Decent effort and my first beer from this brewery.
