27.5cl bottle courtesy of and shared with Gnoff. Bottle #159076.

2012 Vintage Aroma is dominated by dark chocolate and moderate coffee and espresso. moderate fruit character including cherry, plum and pear. Light smokiness and low alcohol note. Really nice complex malt aroma. Pours black with some dark brown notes on the edges. Moderately thick mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges. Light lacing. Flavor is similar to the aroma with lots of chocolate, roast and light smoke. The roast is dark coffee with a light smoked meat quality. Moderate fruit quality with cherry, plum, prune and berry. Some smokiness in the finish with a bit of an ashy character. Medium low bitterness. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Low creaminess. Overall a very nice imperial stout with good malt complexity that is well balanced with the fruitiness from the yeast. The chocolate and roast are well balanced.

Initial nice taste, but hen it falls flat. A bit more head than I’m used to from British ales, so it looks pretty good. But aroma and taste and palate are all very light, flat and almost bland. Next!

Bottle from some place that sells beer. Poured a clear chesnut brown with a broken white frothy head. The aroma is malty with a little yeast in the background. The flavour is medium bitter, malty, slightly metallic and with a few roasted nuts floating around on the palate. I used to like this. I’ve moved on, the beer hasn’t.

Bottle at home, from BOE, 13/04/13. Bottle #122,815 of 210,000. Mid black with a big frothy tan head that retains well. Nose is roast malt, molasses, dark treacle toffee, cocoa powder, brown sugars. Taste comprises, dark roast malts, touch of booze, chocolate, dark treacle toffee, light soapy notes. Full bodied, soft carbonation, pitched perfectly, makes for fairly effortless drinking of such a big beer! Overall a more than decent offering, looks great, feels great, the flavour profile is solid enough - the alcohol is well disguised and the feel on the palate is first rate. I’d take this one again any day!
