(Bottle, Huxley’s, Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, 9 Aug 2009) Amber colour with lasting, foamy, beige head. Malty, nutty nose with dark fruit and grainy crystal malt. Malty, nutty taste with notes of dried fruit, orange peel and a slightly bittersweet finish. Medium body. Well balanced and tasty without getting really daring.

(bottle) Clear, amber colour with a medium-sized off-white foamy head. Lemon-fruity and resiny hoppy aroma with a moderately sweet cara-malty and slightly crusty blend. Light-bitter flavour, light bodied with a crispy mf. A bit slim malty base, but with an aromatic fruity hops-profile and a light nutty touch; quite dry and slightly bitter finish with cara-malt and a rounded hoppy touch (11.VII.09).

440ml can from Tesco. Gold with a fast fading cream head; aroma of malt and caramel; somewhat stewed earthy malt flavours with sweet caramel and gentle bitterness to finish. Not bad for a cheap canned bitter. (4/3/4/2/12=2.5)
500ml bottle from Aldi. A straightforward, malty bitter, with a caramel finish - presumably less heavily pastuerised than the canned version. (6/3/6/2/13=3.0)

Keg at the Bugle, Reading. Pitch black with a thin ring of cream head, tawny brown when held to the light; dusty malt aroma; watery texture with chocolate malt flavours and a milky coffee finish. An OK keg mild, but not a patch on the modern cask alternatives.

Bottle that ahem.. someone very kindly brought around and that has sat unloved and unwanted in my beer cupboard for some time Pours almost copper in colour with substantial off white head that soon subsides. Aroma is bit malty and some old furniture. Sweet malty and with plenty of caramel, there are some hops and whilst this wasn’t as bad as I anticipated it also wasn’t that great, a very so so beer. Bottled(500ml). -Dark orange coloured, small to medium white head, dusty mild grassy nose. Sweet malty, noticable hops and mild grassy with notes of caramel and touch of spices. Typical bitter.

Cask at the Wharf, Aalborg. It pours a clear, golden body with a minimal off-white head leaving lacings. The aroma is not very pleasant, with something strange I don’t recognize. Something in the direction of old urine on dry forest ground on a hot summer day. There’s hops and malts as well, but not enough to save it. The flavor is better, lacking the unpleasant aroma, and with citrusy, piney hops up front, supported by a malty background. Some butterscotch notes. Fine bitterness. Medium to full body and a bitter finish. The nose was borderline bad, else it’s a decent beer, but not something I will crave to revisit. (090205)

Location: Originally discovered this one a few years back at the Total Wine in Richmond, VA. 12 oz bottle
Overall Impression: One of my favorite/go-to beers. Wonderfully drinkable smooth, amber beer. It really just works, and holds additional value for me, as one of my first favorite beers, hence the probably bloated rating, especially when compared to most others.
