(Bottle 75 cl) Pours a hazy, reddish brown with a yellowish head. Fantastic aroma of oak and vanilla. Medium-bodied with lightly sour accents and an edge of oak. Quite interesting. 240706

Usual strong appearance from Heavyweight. Lightly hazy with sediment on the bottom and a large, well-retained head. Body is a soft magenta-tinged caramel, with darker mahogany tones through the middle. Head is dark-beige and laces quite well.
Strong, stickyish caramel in the nose is smoothed by buttercream and a blanket of soft fruits. But for all of the sugar and raisins, it’s never sharp, nor do I find any strange or off flavors. Light vanilla and a hint of vinousness with moderate roast that is also quite relaxed. No alcohol, and as it warms, some lively currant and dark chocolate flavors find their way in to the mix, giving a light livliness to the otherwise smooth, easygoing, malty ale.
Similar flavor profile, with the light fruits being softened by a wall of caramel-toffee. Importantly, it’s not overly sweet, with strong attenuation providing balance and a medium to medium-full body. A touch of roast is passing, almost peaty, with some light spanish coffee notes. But for the most part, I don’t find too much complexity, just a wonderfully balanced, malty, caramel-based beer. Hints of sticky prune/raisin notes emerge somewhat, on the end, but that might also be my imagination, knowing that it has raisins in it. Carbonation is perfect. The bottle had breathed for a while and just a soft, supple mouthfeel was left. No alcohol in the flavor.

Dark golden ale with a lacing off white head. Nice floral hops in aroma. In mouth, a pleasnat caramel and floral hops, caramel and sweet nutty notes. Medium bodied. bottle at BCTC 2006. RIP HW!

Sampled at RBSG06. Clear red color with a thin off-white head. Sweet caramel and malt aroma. Sweet caramel with a hint of sour. Lots of bourbon but very mellow.

Bottle: Poured a deep mahogany color barleywine with a medium off-white foamy head with good retention. Aroma of plums and prunes with some sweet caramel malt. Taste is quite sweet but not disgustingly so with some nice touch of plums and prunes. Hops are clearly present bit not overpowering on the sweet caramel malt. Body is above average but could be a bit more full. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall a very good barleywine but missing some character to make this a truly great beer.

Sampled at kp’s Cellar Party. Dark brown pour with a thin fleeting head. Thick dried fruit aroma with just a touch of bourbon. Smooth and sweet with just enough backing bitterness. Very good now, but I think this will improve with some age.

Enjoyed this at kp’s Cellar Party. Clear brown colored body that makes a fleeting white head. Good solid malty aroma. Sweet malt prevails overall with just a touch of hop bitterness. Good body and one I’d drink again if I could.
