Description
In 1861 the 25-years old Heinrich Schneider decided to found a brewery on the “Grün’schen Hof” in Hachenburg. The Hachenburger brewery soon became the most important family brewery within the region. With business leader and co-owner Jens Geimer the family-owned company has reached the fifth generation and is still entirely independent.
Key to the success is that the beer is consistently cooled, the precious beer has achieved its special aroma over and over again for 150 years. What was true then is still true today: the long and cold ageing process is a fundamental requirement for a real Hachenburger as well as the use of high-grade raw materials. As well as the natural spring water from the Rothbach valley

5l mini keg. Very nice, clear dark copper colour with huge, thick, frothy, fully lasting, moderately lacing, barely white head. Cautious caramel malty aroma, grassy hoppy overtones, a strawy and papery touch. Taste is minimally sweet caramel malty, grassy hoppy overtones, a papery touch, cautious grainy, bready undertones. Quite drinkable, a bit anaemic for a 5.5% Märzen.

330ml bottle. Clear, orangey, deep golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting ,minimally lacing, white head. Strawy and intensely grainy aroma, a touch of dark (forest) honey. Taste is strawy, grainy, minimally sweet, a honey touch again; plain bitter hoppy finish. Reminds me of what I imagine to remember to be the taste of their Pilsener in the 80s (without the honey touch, of course) - but obviously they’ve found their style already in the 1880s.

750ml bottle. Murky, orangey, dark golden colour with surprisingly huge, slowly, though not fully diminishing, white head. Sweetish aroma of candied fruit, fruit in rum, apple, a touch of almond, hints of alcohol, some hop bitterness. Taste is intense malty, moderate sweetness, hints of candied fruit, sweet, filtered apple juice, welcome bitter hoppy counterweight, a touch of marzipan; some warming alcohol in the lasting, finish. Oily texture, minimally sticky palate. Not overly complex, not too harsh, balanced. Nice sipper.

Flavours of pale malts and bread mingled with some noble hops. Subdued bittersweet ending. Refreshing on a warm and sunny day in Germany (23.07.2014).
