Review from Notes, enjoyed May 2011

Pours a deep reddish copper color with a slightly dirty beige head that dissipates slowly to a ring on top. The smell is quite sweet, it reminds me more of an old ale than an American barley wine. Caramel, toffee, prunes, dates, cherries, slight bit of resin and a hint of alcohol in there. There’s an almost non existent hop aroma, maybe its an English barleywine? Taste is sweet and fruity. Caramel covered cherries mixed in some toffee, but add a bit of a hop bite. Lingering sweetness in the finish with a little bit of alcohol heat. Sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel, light level of carbonation and a relatively thick body. As an old ale or English barleywine I really enjoyed this, as an American barleywine it misses the mark. Nice sipper, great flavors and aroma, I might have to check out some more brews from Mendocino.

It pours as light gold with a finger’s worth of foam. Nice lacing ensues.

The nose has good balance to it. Flowery hop mild bitters mixed with caramel malt.

The bitterness from the hops is sharp but tempered by malt. It’s actually more bitter, flowery-herbal, than I expected from the smell. There’s grapefruit hitting my palate but it’s sharing duties with herbal and flower like bitterness.

The malt comes across as lightly sweet with some biscuit.

Good mouthfeel, good drinkability. Good IPA. --- Beer merged from original tick of White Hawk (I.P.A.) on 18 May 2015 at 16:29 - Score: 7

Pretty black it tis. Not seeing light through it. Good frothy head of foam with lacing.

Roasty with dark chocolate and a strange other bitter smell.

Roasted malt with bitter chocolate, hints of fruit when I swish the beer in my mouth. Again, there’s something going on with that bitterness that’s off putting to me me.

Okay mouthfeel.

Good brew of the style to get me a Black and Tan style entry. Not something I would bother to buy again.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s in Davis, CA. Pours orange gold with a slight white head. Aroma is earth and citrus over mild roast malt. Med body. Flavor is earthy citrus, some bitter, some slightly roasty malt. It has quite a hop bite. Finishes well towards dry and pretty hoppy/bitter. Good entry for a session IPA.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s in a mixer sixer. Pours a deep orangish brown appearance with a light brown head. The aroma is mostly toasted pumpkin / squash, some caramel, bread, and only light spices. Medium light body. Moderately spicy. Flavor has some orange citrus, toast, lemon, vanilla, allspice, cinnamon, and a moderate amount of pumpkin. Thankfully, the spices aren’t overdone but the beer is still a bit thin and not all that flavorful.

Good double porter. Light roast malt with almost a doppelbock kind of feel. Pours black with good head and lacing. Dark chocolate, caramel. Tap at Rattle and Hum.
