Cask (handpump) @ Wenlock Arms, 26 Wenlock Road, London, Greater London England N1 7TA. [ As Pitfield Christmas Ale ]. Clear dark orange amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, nutty, orange, spicy - ginger - clove. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090102]

Cask handpull at The Wenlock. Very hazy copper, thin off white head. Tastes ok though. A bitter, but a little bit of acidic/bleach to it. Some tangerine-y fruit. Bit of rubber. Maybe not at its best.

Bottle, thx to KnutAlbert. A clear, dark brown beer with a nice, beige head. The aroma is definately on the malty side, with dried fruits, some beef-stock and alcohol. Not much hoppy going on. The flavor has well-hidden alcohol, else it’s mostly dried fruits, beef-stock notes and general maltyness. Surprisingly thin on the palate, with some mineralic notes. Alcohol and bitterness in the finish. A strange one, thin, strong and quite sweet. If I remember correctly, the label said 14% ABV. That don’t seem correct, but it sure was alcoholic. (081215)

Small coarse white head. Chestnut brown body. Faint nutty aroma. Dry-sweetish nutty wooden caramel taste with faint fruity notes. Soft, mild mouthfeel. Light body. Dry roasty wooden floral caramel aftertaste with dusty notes. Sweetish throughout. Lovely and extremely drinkable. (0.25l cask, The Bricklayer’s Arms, Putney, London.)

Bottle at Chris o New Year tasting 08/09. None of us could believe that this was labelled at 14$, but it was. Didn’t drink like a 14% beer so perhaps the 8.2% on this is right. Pretty decent choccy beer. Grainyness in the mouth, fullness and it was very drinkable.

Bottle at Chris o New Year tasting 08/09. Hazy chestnut colour, lasting beige. Slight sour aroma. Quite amazing for a Pitfield beer to get this sourness.

By courtesy of Knut Albert. Bottle shared at a drinking session in Oslo. Hazy, dark orange. Filmy, off-white head. Pretty fair smell of dried fruits and sweet malt. Bready malt flavour, with anise and an herbal touch. Bittersweet ending. Strong, but the alcohol is not that prominent [15.12.2008].

Aroma is moderate malty, sour notes, citrus, banana sour notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. (Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 8 Aug 2008) Black colour with frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of strong black coffee and dark chocolate. Malty, roasted taste with black coffee, cocoa, wild berries, prunes and raisin. Fairly bitter finish with cocoa and coffee. Complex and lots of taste. More character than the 4% abv would suggest. Very nice one.
