Description

Sold for only $ 0,30 a bottle in Pede Drinks Market in St Lievens Houtem. Slight hay and apple aroma. medium bodied, grainy, sweetish, but where is the flavor? I can only detect the slightest hint of licorice. Bland and forgettable.

Old-fashioned sweet stout, of the type nobody in Flanders still appreciates, tasted at café De Gans; made by Louwaege when it was still in existence and tasted as old beer (4 years old). Thin but dense, beige head, near black colour with ruby hue. Candied fruits in the nose, some faint coffee (with milk), candi syrup; sweet taste, candi-like, chocolatey, soft and slick, sourish touch, weak roasted bitterness in the end. Very good for its style.

Bottle 25cl. @ home.Clear medium yellow color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, grain, toasted, dusty, sweet malt, vintage malt notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is medium to light, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light metalic. [20090314]

(Bottle 25 cl) 4,5% ABV in my version. Golden beer with a small, white head. Very light in body and somewhat watery. Some malt with only a faint hoppiness. 250598

(Bottle 33 cl) Black as coffee with a huge, frothy head. Very sweet, sticky stout with some notes of caramel and candi sugars And perhaps something slightly lactic in the finish. Not an easy beer. 120498

(Bottle 33 cl) Pale golden with a small, white head that vanishes completely. A lightly sweetish malt in the nose, some malt in the flavour and a very discreet bitterness in the finish. Incredibly light-bodied with a LOT of CO2. Surprising that this old-fashioned pilsener style has survived the Alken-Maes takeover of Louwaege. I wonder for how long, but am sad to say that it wouldn’t really be any great loss. 120605

(Bottle 33 cl) Pilsener golden with a slight haze. The head comes floating out as soon as you uncap this - a very lively carbonation. Strangely the head vanishes completely in the glass without a trace of it ever being there. No scent to speak of. Pronounced yeasty flavours and a rather unpleasant prickly bitterness in the finish. But in between those two points nothing much happens. Supermarket brands aren’t necessarily poor, but this one was. Very uninteresting blond ale. 100605
