Description
Based in the heart of the English Lake District, brewers of bold, innovative beers since 2002, our beer range is eclectic and includes thirst quenching session beers, big hopped pale ales, deep dark stouts and sours. With a range of core beers, available in Cask, Keg, Bottle and Can.
At Hawkshead Brewery we make the sort of beer we like to drink - distinctive, full of flavour, handmade, and perfectly crafted. We are small enough to know most of our customers, not to care about the mass market, be able to brew lots of different beers, experiment and innovate. We are big enough to employ a team of five brewers, make around 140 barrels (23,000 litres) of beer a week, deliver direct throughout The North, and our Tap at our Staveley site is open every day.
In about 2017, a controlling interest in the company was taken by Liverpool-based Halewood Wines & Spirits, and this may result in further expansion.

(Cask at Ship & Mitre, Liverpool, 24 July) Colour is dark amber with a frothy head. Nose is fruity and hoppy with a nice grapefruit aroma. Taste is fruity and actually very hoppy with loads of grapefruit character, almost piney. Balanced sweetness. Long and very bitter finish. Feels very much US style and a very nice brew.

Cask gravity at Kent BF 2006. Chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Malty and red berries aroma. Yes, malty in mouth too. Some hoppy dryness on end, but mostly a dry medium malt bitter. Fine.

Cask gravity at Kent BF 2006. This was labelled as Lakeland Gold, but at the same ABV. Deep gold, lasting bubbly off white head. Very flowery hop aroma. Really lovely beer. Bit astringent, but hop is fantastic. A bit like a US style IPA. This is my kind of beer.

The aroma is full of malts with a slight note of alcohol that was not unpleasant. The nose also has hints of sweet caramel. The aroma is stronger than the flavor which is malty, but not overly sweet. The beer is bitter almost at the start of the sip. The palate is crisp and clean with a thin to medium body. Moderate carbonation. The pour was cloudy copper with a short, tan head.
