About
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

Med bod, light carbo, seriously lacking bubbles. Moderately oxidated, assertive wet cardboard and med-light oxocaramel. Little else to be found here, tastes like a bad macropils.

Very sweet, cloying. Med sour, no funk. Lots of sour cherry flavor, artificial feeling. Out of balance. Tasty, but very basic, Kasteel Rouge-like, only slightly less good.

This 750ml bottle was located at Trader Joe’s in Santa Fe early fall last year. Slightly cooled, I remove the cage and cork and pour into a Straffe Hendrik tulip glass. The view is a dark brown body topped by a heroic head of creamy tan, very fine bubbles. The smell is stewed dark fruit, malt and grain. I lift the glass for a taste. I get plums, cherries, malt, candy and white bread. Subdued in its flavors and easy to drink, not blazing any new trails.

Thin bod, high carbo. Med-high Belgian phenols, clean clove-pepper-flowery mix. Everything else in the background. Pretty simple, but effective, nice execution.

Bottle, best before 2022. Murky mezzo mix colour. Ripe banana sweetness, oxidised, caramel. Front heavy, edgy fizzy. This one hasn't aged well. Heavy on the booze. Sticky.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear deep gold with a finger of white foam that dissipates quickly. Nice lacing down the glass. Big perfume-y yeast esters on the nose with banana bread and floral aromas. Palate is similar, carbonation is a bit muted and mouthfeel is soft. Smooth and easy drinking. Lingering Belgian yeast phenols with just a touch of clove - leans more into the banana bread floral side. Enjoyable without being overly cloying.

Color dorado, turbia, espuma blanca jabonosa bien retenida. Aroma a esteres de levadura, piel de naranja, albaricoque maduro, bizcocho, algo de plátano, especias. En boca es un festival, elegante a la par que sabrosa, ligeramente punzante, de entrada dulce y afrutada, notas de repostería, naranja, miel, orejones, levadura...final seco, amargo y muy especiado. Madre mía, que delicia!

On tap at De Gouveneur Maastricht. Hazy amber brown colour lasting beige head. Apple aroma. Over the usual guldren draak beer. Some alcohol strength is present and a little heat in the finish. Its a malty srong Belgian beer with some pleasant apple fruit green apple edge. It does have a heat on the finish though. Interesting. Warming. A finishing beer.
