Cask at Reading Beer Festival. Gold in colour. Big tropical fruite aroma and taste - mango and passion fruit perhaps? - with some lemon too, and then a good fresh leafy hop bitterness to finish. Tasty and well-balanced, and a pleasing beer to finish the day on. And it means that in one festival I’ve doubled my Rutland rates from 2 to 4 - just one more needed to make my world a little bluer!

Cask at the Reading Beerfest. Golden-ambet with a thin white head. Light floral notes up front with a more assertive grassy finish and a mild bitterness. It grew on me, I was quite enjoying it by the end. Plus it’s a Rutland rate, which almost entitles it to a bonus rarity point!

Handpull cask at the Maypole, Cambridge. Strong iced tea brown, clear with a film of off-white head. Oak chips, milk chocolate, hyssop, chestnut in the aroma. Doggedly bitter taste offset only slightly by the nutty maltiness. Long intense bitter finish. Thin body (and a bit flat). Verdict: not perfect but a bloody fine brown. I love this brewery and jump at the chance to try their beers when I see them.
