Keg at the brewery tap. Light gold with low carbonation and almost no head. Subtle aroma of lemon curd and brandy butter. Sweet creamy taste with just a touch of bitterness from the submissive hop. The soft carbonation allows the slick body to shine through. Very simple, but very good for the style. May be a bit bland for some but I enjoyed it.

Keg at the brewery tap. Melon-colour with pink and orange hues. Aroma doesn’t appeal to me - too much posset - but there’s a fair bit of papaya and plantain as well. Taste is only mildly sour with a pronounced bitterness through to the end of the sip. Thin body but it really works for the style. Light floral aftertaste. Man, this has issues which is a shame because there are some plus points as well. An easy-drinking but imbalanced sour.

Gravity cask at the 2017 Cambridge Beer Festival. Amber, hazy, with a film of white head. Soft citrus with some spice in the malty aroma. Taste doesn’t do it for me: sweet and vegetal with some off plastic flavours. Long finish reminiscent of PVC and spiced orange peel. Not particularly drinkable unfortunately.

Keg at the brewery tap. On the day after Star Wars day, I’m looking forward to using the Schwartz! Very dark brown and only slightly translucent. Very little head or visible carbonation. Chocolate caramel, medicinal herbs and a touch of molasses on the nose. Lovely sweet taste, with rosemary, treacle and rye notes. The carbonation lifts the body and tickles the tongue. Medium finish with a bit of caraway, chocolate and yeast extract in the aftertaste. I like this more with every sip. A good expression of a style that’s often difficult to carry off.

Gravity cask at the brewery tap. Dark brown and translucent with a purplish hue. A tiny little bit of head. Light on aroma, with notes of red grape, liquorice and bitter dark chocolate. Gorgeous taste: sweet and slightly malt led but the liquorice notes never really leave. Bitter hoppy notes in the back of the throat for the finish. Blackberry and fig alongside gentle citrus in the aftertaste. It’s not perfect - the body is thin and there’s a hint of soapy astringency- but it’s a moreish easy-drinker. I personally tend to prefer Calverley’s cask to their keg, and this is no exception.

Keg at the Brewery Tap. Mid-brown with a purplish hue. Very little head. Cloudy. Banana and herbal smell with carob and forest floor notes. Sweet taste: booze threatens to offset the balance but doesn’t. Sourish note near the finish. Heavy carbonation. A beer I could grow to really like, and on face value a decent example of the style.

Can taken out from the brewery tap. A different yeast from their original kölsch is used. Milky yellow, slightly hazy, with a quickly disappearing white head. Lemony and slightly salty aroma with a sour herbal note. Bitter sour citrus in the taste with notes of soap. Clean refreshing finish with some sweetness at the end. Aftertaste of lime peel. Not the greatest but refreshing and mostly tasty.

Keg at the Brewery Tap. Reddish brown, clear with very low visible carbonation. Papaya, pine resin and apple skins. Sweet fruity taste with pomegranate and a note of ripe tangerine. Soft carbonation, flat body. Sticky resinous hop aftertaste. A really decent IPA.

Keg at the brewery tap. Dark gold with a large but quickly dissipating white head. Odd aroma of pesticide, sick and tropical fruit. Bittersweet taste with simple and unobtrusive hop in the background. Plastic aftertaste. This isn’t good at all. Undrinkable really.

Keg at the brewery tap. Mid brown, clear with very little head. Fungus, woodsmoke, yeast extract in the aroma. Sweet, slightly chocolatey and extremely malty taste. Mushroom potage and smoked wheat in the aftertaste. Not bad if a bit odd.
