Can shared at home - Black pour witb a thin tan head. Medium roasted malty and hoppy with notes of citrus undertones, some cocoa and caramel, medium body, roasted malty and hoppy bitter finish.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours very hazy/opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate black/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery hop; and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate black/roast/bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance. Some lightly increasing lingering hop/char astringency, but not overwhelming. Moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, sticky/resinous/rindy, and lightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is an excellent Black IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and roast/bready malt flavors; smooth and easy to drink; despite the aggressively bitter/resinous/drying finish. Feels like a lot of Simcoe/Citra. Extremely juicy, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; nice black/roast/bready malt backbone, with zero residual sweetness from aggressive resin dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example as expected.

Can, from City Hops. Pours opaque dark brown with foamy beige head, citrus aroma, medium carbonation, medium bitter roasted malt taste with mild citrus flavor, smooth body, long finish. A good brew, enjoyable.

Can from The Hop Shop. Jet black color, viscous pour, off brown head that settles to an edge. Aroma of dark chocolate and cinnamon. Taste has unsweetened cocoa, apple, burnt toast, espresso, more cinnamon. Medium to light body. Boozy finish. Interesting.

Can from Craft Brewed. Pours a hazy, deep brown with a finger of off-white head that lingers, then dissipates. Dank tropical fruit, pine and passion fruit aromas on the nose. Dragon fruit and kiwi come out as it warms. Cacao nib and more more dank tropical fruit on the palate. Hoppy bitterness with some tropical fruit skin astringency, and mild cacao notes. As advertised without any of acrid notes that can occur in black IPAs. I've not had a better rendition of the NE black IPA, now whether it should be done is a different question all together, but it can be done, and Evil Twin has nailed it.

Can thanks to Brian. Pours slightly hazy golden orange, small off-white head, decent lacing. Aroma is is urine, cabbage, lemons, grapefruit. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, harsh, acidic. Medium body. Hmmm.

12oz can pours a drk black with a funny grey looking head. Nose is sweet, malt, mild milk sugar, chocolate, vanilla, caramel. Flavors are the same, caramel, malt, milk sugars, chocolate, vanilla. Sounds like it would be a sugar bomb, but it's not cloying. Full bodied, obviously.

Might be a good IPA if it weren't for the cloying Fruity Pebbles/Froot Loops sweetness that eventually overtakes the pint. Starts with a moderately grainy, citric hop front, then slowly amps up the sugary onslaught, fake fruit flavoring melding with lactose, yeast, and juicy hop notes. Overwhelming, to say the least. Finishes with a cloying swipe of citrus and berry. Pretty much undrinkable after it warms. Gimmicky, but shame on me for buying it, I guess.

Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is a great IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Great mix of juicy, vibrant, and dank hops; balanced malts, with no residual sweetness. A very enjoyable offering. Can't really taste any of the cereal; but the artificial colors are listed on the can, and are somewhat noticeable in the beer.

Good idea, terrible execution. The Apple Jacks are on full display, but the malts add an underlying raw, wet-grain funkiness that's terribly off-putting, while the overly bitter finish adds a oily, soapy acridity that pairs horribly with the cereal sweetness. Grows undrinkable as it warms. Aroma's appropriate,since it smells like Apple Jacks, and the pour's a nice black with brown edges and a modest tan head. Even the feel's good, nice and smooth and creamy. But this beer's awful, much worse than the score implies.
