A California common (steambeer) by Aviator, at BeerTemple in Amsterdam. Creamy, yellowish egg-white, thick and frothy head over a misty amberish pale orange blonde beer – the classic look of this style ever since it was resurrected by Anchor. Aroma follows Anchor’s example, the very starting point of the American craft beer revolution, pretty faithfully too: old moldy orange peel, dry biscuit, peanuts, toasted sweet onion, peach, apple cake, hints of cloves and cinnamon (even vaguely ‘speculooskruiden’). Fruity onset in a clean way, notes of dried peach, unripe banana and dried apricot, sweetish with soft carb and smooth mouthfeel; biscuity malt body with bread crust-like edges, soft hoppy finish with retronasal citrus peel-like effect as well as the cinnamon-like scent returning, without sweetness though, so clearly from the hops; ends dryish, a bit powdery and bread crumb-like and softly bitter. Like most of Aviator’s beers, very well executed, but very stereotypical as well, merely copying Anchor Steam rather than having the guts to dare the great grandfather of the American craft beer movement by doing something different with the concept. Like Anchor Steam, a very enjoyable beer for sure, though.

Sweet stout by Aviator, thanks Craftmember for sharing at BeerTemple in Amsterdam. Lightly lacing, creamy, pale yellowish beige, opening head on a very dark bronze, near-black beer with hazy burgundy edges. Aroma of hazelnut paste, milk chocolate even, sugared tea, candied date, dried prunes, coffee cream, toffee. Sweetish onset but less sweet than expected based on the nose, dried plum, fig and a blackberry-ish undertone, fizzy carbonation, smooth and slick mouthfeel partially made so smooth by the velvetiness of the oatmeal; mild toasty bitterish edge in the end, tad metallic with low roasted bitterness, remaining primarily sweetish and gently toasted bitter. Elegant, slick, typical example of the style, decent and pleasant enough.

On tap at Jopen Proeflokaal. Hazy deep golden orange colour, white head. Aroma of stale hops, hint of hibiscus, light butter. Flavour is light to medium sweet, some spikes of honey, light ginger, a little tartness from the hibiscus, more stale hops, bitter finish. Light bodied. Not in great shape I guess.
