Description
Townes Brewery was started by Alan Wood in 1994 at an old ice cream factory and moved to its present site, the Speedwell Inn at Staveley, in 1997. The brewery and pub were taken over by Lawrie and Nicoleta Evans on Alan's retirement in 2013. They continue to use Alan's recipes at the five-barrel brewery. Townes beers are rarely found outside the pub, other than occasional swaps and at beer festivals.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is golden, hazy (no finings used), with a white frothy head. Nose is fruity with grapefruit, lemon and a grassy hop aroma. Taste is fruity, slightly yeasty, with citrus (grapefruit, lemon) and a pronounced grassy hop aroma in the long finish. Very refreshing.

Cask at GBBF 06. Gold with thin beige head. Hop is quite earthy. Malts are pale and juicy. Some Goldings hop I think. I’ve had a lot of English beers claiming to be IPAs, but I think that this is one of the better ones

[Cask at GBBF] Golden coloured. Very citric nose. Dryish with rounded mouthfeel and light-medium body. Lemon and orange dominates. Very dry near resiny finish with striking bitterness.

[Cask at GBBF 2005] A hazy orange beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is suphury and hoppy, while the flavor mainly is sweet with notes of a hop variety I don’t like.

[Cask at GBBF 2004] An orange beer with a small white head. Both the aroma and flavor are of caramel combined with an off-note of diacethyl.
