Five Kingdoms Brewery
Microbrewery in Isle of Whithorn, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland 🏴
Established in 2015
It came about through a mutual passion for beer of publican Alastair Scoular who owns and runs The Steam Packet Inn, the village’s only pub and his head chef Brendon Dennett. Brendon, who had previously worked at renowned Scottish brewery 6 Degrees North in Stonehaven brought this wealth of brewing knowledge to the partnership. With the location, premises and experience of the pub trade and a pure passion for real ale, Alastair and Brendon were the perfect balance for a successful venture to create honest, fine ales.

Bottle ordered from the brewery by my Mrs. Aroma is spicy, fruity. A murky opaque brown. Foamy off-white head. Spicy. Sour. Zesty. Rye. Underlying caramel. Light. Slick. Very fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Lively Red IPA (lost about 50% when it gushed everywhere on being opened).

Cask at Pig's Ear. Near opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Smooth palate, good fine minerally carbonation. Smooth but rich malts, good creamy sweetness, earthy roast, modest choc, no so modest smooth earthy coffee. A little berry ripe fruits. Touch of lavender or something. Liked this one a lot, smooth, richly flavoured and very drinkable.

Can from the very friendly CAMRA stand at the Birmingham NEC Good Food Show; I like the Crocodile Dundee reference! Hazy yellow with a white head and a middling fizz; maybe a bit too fizzy for my liking. Citrus up front - grapefruit and lemon - with a touch of chalkiness. Sweet tinned peaches come through, but there's a fairly hefty bitterness in the finish that the nice flavours struggle to compete with. Just ok as a result.

500ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - cheers Graham!]. Jet black colour with average to huge, frothy, slowly osteoporosing, moderately lacing, dirty off-white head. Sweet-ish, oaty-grainy and slightly roasty, dark malty aroma, hints of chocolate pudding, grassy hoppy overtones. Taste is sweet-ish, chocolately, dark malty and oaty malty, hints of chocolate pudding, mildly bitter, grassy hoppy overtones, subtle sweetness with a touch of lactose. Dissolved sugar enriched, watery texture, smooth and soft palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation. Balanced, homogeneous - very nice.

Bottle from the very friendly CAMRA stand at the Birmingham NEC Good Food Show. Dark brown with an off white head and a light but pleasant frothy fizz. Bonfire smoke up front, with dark chocolate and a little toffee coming through. There's an undertone of dark berries and a little wood. Very easy drinking but loads of flavour and very satisfying. An excellent mild.

Keg at the Fell Bar, Penrith. Hazy gold with a white head. Tropical flavours up front with sweet grapefruit coming through. Some hoppy piney notes in the mildly bitter and drying finish. Enjoyed this, very refreshing and drinkable.
