Growler shared by ryan at the RBSG Grand Tasting... an interesting place to pad my dominance of Virginia beers. Neat! Pours a clear brown color with a medium tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and nutty notes. The taste is caramel. nutty notes and roasted malts. Medium bodied. Nice.

Draft at Merrifield location. Not sure how the pour looked as it was brought to my table, but it still retained a small white head when it arrived at the table. Body was medium-dark yellow. Aroma was hoppy, with a notiable nose of citrus and a touch of yeast and a good helping of sweet malts. Pretty dang refreshing.

On tap at Merrifield location. Pours a dark black, with a small dark, tan head. The aroma is chocolates, coffee, roasted caramel. Flavor has a noticeable alcohol bite, with plenty of dark chocolate and roasted malts. About on par with the oaked version of the same beer, though I find it quite interesting that I did not have this until some time after having the oaked version of this beer. Aside from that it’s one of the best crafted beers that I’ve tried from them.

At Falls Church location. Pours a pretty dark color (almost black) with a medium, fast dissipating head. Notes of smoke and a strong roasted malt aroma. Flavor is malty, roasted, *much* better after allowing the frozen glass to warm up after about 20 minutes.

Draft at Merrifield (Falls Church) location. Pours a hazy, cloudy yellow color with a white head. Initially the aroma is pretty subtle, as it’s far too cold when it’s initially served (frozen glasses, come on!). As it warms the aroma comes out - spices, banana, yeast. Flavors are stronger, spicier, and pretty refreshing.

On Tap at Northern Virginia Summer BrewFest. Pours a dark brown color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is caramel, coffee, and a very mild pepper. Flavor is light (compared to other porters) - rich roasted, chocolates, and no noticeable heat until the liquid hits the back of the throat - then there’s a mild and enjoyable spice "burn."

Palate: Crisp, drinkable, refreshing
Overall Impression: I thought it was alright, but I didn't love it.
