The Hobgoblin was the name of one of the first pubs I frequented when I moved to London at the age of 18. It's now called The Rose. Clear golden with a fine enough hoppiness and easy strength - not thin or weak tasting at all. Pretty good session material here.

Just up the small hill beyond the central areas, it's a mid-terrace traditional pub with lots of local charm. It has a central entrance and central corridor with two rooms either side, the bar is against the rear area of the left hand one, with the right-hand room a little more cosy and roomy. A choice of six local real ales available dominating the bar. They show football here and the aforementioned corridor leads to a charming suburban garden area, the first part of which has cover with another large television monitor showing the football - with Barrow AFC's Saturday afternoon league fixture the choice for the locals here as I passed to take my place at the grassy part just beyond.

Opposite the central Market Street with a front terrace area facing right down this street, it's of a traditional ilk, but quite a modern bar on the inside and more of a restaurant space once you wander behind the bar, which is a couple of metres into the building from its front entrance. There's some pub seating in this area, with the counter carrying a local selection of four real ales and a craft keg or two.

Just outside the central area on the south side of the main road running through the town, and not very far from the Laurel and Hardy museum. It's an almost square building with a traditional appeal and the bar in front of its central entrance. The tables in the space to the right of here are more set-up for dining, which was a popular option on the Saturday evening I walked in. Four local real ales available but limited outdoor space with a few picnic tables placed around the car park area at the rear.

Close to the wall on the eastern flank of the walled city which is on the inner harbour, it's right by the indoor market building. This is a fine enough specialist beer shop and practically all French in selection. I couldn't say how many were from Brittany and the immediate area in this small corner premises, but I had not trouble selecting beers made within a few miles of Saint Malo. There's plenty!
