Oakes Profile - Brewver

Quite pale yellow. Not much head. Aroma is fruity - peachy, passionfruit, lychee notes. This has a mid-range bitterness, and the fruit is really bright here. Good balance. Malts come across fairly sweet, but that's also sort of the honeyish lychee notes from the krush.

Purplish, hazy, medium head. The gin barrels are quite prominent, and the cherries and plums come through. So much of the plum, a bit of blueberry, and the gin is a bit softer on the palate. The body is soft, even for Floodland. Very good.

Dullish colour. Not much head. This is a bit phenolic, definitely giving off "strong tripel" vibes. It's a bit off-dry, with phenols, banana. It's fairly sweet. It's not bad, but it's not coming together all that well for me.

Amber, slight haze, thick head. Aroma has some biscuity malt, light caramel, some alcohol and a fair bit of bitterness. Clean ferm. Light orange, nice little neomex in there…columbus is good; they’ve taken notes. CTZ tells me you understand IPA. This is good stuff, a quality recipe that’s well executed.

Pours gold and bright. Medium head. Mosaicy taste and lots of pale malt. Low bitterness, though, like they can’t escape their hazy roots. So a bit like drinking a sticky onion bread and the poor nectaron had no chance. All told, it comes across like a bright hazy rather than WC. That’s okay, but a lost opportunity because this beer would fucking love some Chinooky bitterness.

Flying IPA from Echigo Beer Company

Bright copper with a medium head. Full biscuity malt aroma bordering on worty. Medium bitterness, again a big, warm malt. Low hop expression outside of the bitterness. Some butter creeping in as it warms up. Echigo was the first craft brewer in Japan and this tastes like the first IPA in Japan. This is so old school you need to listen to Flower Travellin’ Band while drinking it.

Cataclysmic Flood from Backcountry Brewing

Pale and slightly dullish yellow, opaque. Looks more Backcountry than Badlands, in that respect. The aroma pops bright and orangey, with some of those more honeyish NZ accents. On the palate, there's some hop burn and the expression is neither as bright nor as defined. There's a pretty strong alcohol taste as well, somewhat unexpected in a regular IPA.

That's too bad - a bit more restraint would have allowed the same hop as in the aroma show through on the palate. The Backcountry base malt is there, but yeah, sometimes the note you don't play is more important than the one you do.
