[33cl can from Beer52.] A dark tawny brown pour with a thin tan head; coffee aroma with a touch of vanilla; rich coffee taste to start, then some vanilla essence kicks in that tastes artificial and leaves a metallic aftertaste that spoils the finish.

Pours a reddish copper colour with an off-white head; the aroma reminds me of toffee apples; the taste is dominated by roasted malt with a metallic bitter aftertaste.

[Cask at The Monks’ Retreat, Reading.] A superb glossy dark brown colour with a red tint, with a thin off-site head on top; not much aroma but a hint of malt; however the taste is great, exploding in the mouth with an intense caramel maltiness, the sweetness is well balanced with a toasty dryness leading to a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Excellent.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Gold with an off-white head; sweet, fruity and chewy, with a clean, dry and moderately bitter finish. A pleasant, well-constructed session bitter.

Bottle: clear gold with an off-white head, some carbonation; earthy aroma; gently bitter with a clean aftertaste. Everything an "ordinary" bitter should be.
