Grew up in England and developed a taste for English ales. Traveled a lot to Belgium and surrounding countries and grew to appreciate these European styles. Traveled to USA a fair bit, starting in the dark days when it was a beer desert, and then enjoying the flourishing microbrewery scene. Moved in 1994 to Australia which was then a beer desert, so grew to appreciate the excellent Aussie wines and my own homebrew. Now there is a flourishing microbrewery scene in Aus, which is great. I travel a lot to Asia, which was generally grim for beer, although with some interesting pockets of excellence there if you looked hard; but now several countries have good craft beers. I was a RateBeerian for 18 years (Oct 2007 until its demise in 2025), with username Pyobon.

(Can) Pours muddy brown with big tan head. Great aroma - plenty of pine with berry notes. Great texture- medium body with plenty of bright carbonation. Tastes good too with a nice balance between tart fruit, caramel and hoppy bitterness. Don’t judge a book by its cover - it’s not pretty but it’s great to drink.

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (2022) from Hawkers Beer

(Can) Pours black with small tan head. Excellent aroma - oak, bourbon, notes of toffee. Full bodied, smooth, slightly sticky, modest very fine carbonation. Great taste. Alcohol is apparent through the palate a pleasant toffee sweetness at the start and through the mid palate. Bourbon, oak, dried fruit, cherries provide a little tartness. Nice burnt bitter notes in finish. Very good, rather boozy.

(Can) Pours slightly hazy amber with big loose white head. Pleasant aroma of grapefruit and citrus. Medium body with bright carbonation. Good taste. Tangy citrus and gentle bitterness from start to finish. Malt is hidden. Very pleasant.

(Can) Pours hazy golden amber with tiny white head. Aroma of tropical fruit, pepper and cardboard. Medium body with plenty of bright carbonation. Good interesting taste. There’s tropical fruit, peppery spice, notes of toasted brown bread crust. Unusual and enjoyable.

(Can) Pours hazy amber with lumps and a decent white head. Subtle aroma with notes of grain, stone-fruit and herbs. Medium body with good fine bright carbonation. Pleasant taste. Some tart fruitiness at the start is quickly joined by some herbal and bitter hoppy notes that steadily dominate. The fruity notes have orange and stone fruit. There’s some caramel malt in the background. Doesn’t look pretty with the floating lumps, but is good to drink.
