Plenty of Lagunitas WC IPAs back in the day, Hop Stoopid anyone? So now it is time to try a "modern" West Coast IPA from Heineken, excuse me, I mean Lagunitas. A single 12 oz can from the local beer shop, Mr. T's, my Cowtown snifter ready for the pour. The body shows an indistinct, lemon yellow body topped with a good head of completely white foam. Nice scent, hoppy, plenty of pine, citrus and grass. The taste is throwback to the early IPAs. Grapefruit, cedar, resin, a touch of lime and something earthy. Bitter enough. For a basic IPA, not imperial, it is rather decent. I will be good to drink this one again.

This is a 12 oz bottle from Half Time bought earlier in the year. I have a snifter from ABGB ready to receive the pour and determine a dark copper-amber body finished by a thin cover of silver-tan foam. The nose presents as scorched grain, molasses and perhaps some dark fruit. A drink gives baked bread, some caramel, malt and plums. Considerably thinner than the doppelbocks I have appreciated in the past. Decent but not much above average in the style.

I have a 12 oz can that was part of an Advent collection from the brewery some time ago. The date stamp indicates the beer is significantly out of date but I persevere. Have not used my Teku in quite a while, so am doing so now. The pour is a non-transparent gold carrying a skim of completely white foam. I smell plenty of hops, yellow fruit, citrus and cut hay. I take a drink and believe immediately the age is showing. Apricots, some pine, grapefruit, papaya, malt and a hint of bitterness. I hope to try this one again someday at the brewery near my son's place.

I have this pint can from my last purchase with Half Time. This evening I use the same glass from an earlier beer, a mug given at a recent beer invitational. I tilt the can to see an off-gold body topped by a moderate head of fully white foam. I smell hops, citrus and a touch of papaya. A drink now, first impression is not bad. Limes, mangoes, malt, white bread, papaya again and a small bitterness. I get something of a blend of New England and West Coast styles. Nice sensation. An easy beer to drink. I'd give it a 7.7 if I could, not that it makes much difference.

So this is the new business model for Samuel Adams? I spotted this 19.2 oz can at a really large convenience store outside Las Vegas at the conclusion of our Canyonlands tour taken at the end of May this year. No real urgency to try this beer but now is the time. Normally I would put a beer of this type in a brown bag for a tasting but I have to see what it looks like. Instead I am using a relatively new beer mug obtained at a brewery invitational last weekend. Not exactly what I would call a cherry color in the pour, it is more of a gold and amber mix completed by a here-and-gone cover of white foam. The smell does lean towards cherries, I will say that. I have a drink and I get cherries right off mostly of an artificial kind, cardboard, some sweetness and an indication of the 9% abv. But all that is not going to save this sampling, I cannot continue. Sam Adams was once a sort of standard bearer. Not understanding this now.

A short draft pour at the Tall City Invitational in Midland this past week. Old gold in color with a slim skim of solidly white foam. The nose gave promise of plenty of hops and pine. The taste matched up with that along with grapefruit, a good malt backbone and a touch of honey sweetness. Glad to note a decent bitterness. Difficult to find throwback IPAs like this one, fortunately I did.

The first Imperial IPA I was able to taste at the Tall City Invitational in Midland, TX last weekend. The nose was strong with pine and hops. Taste was better, sort of a hop bomb. Pine cone, grain, plenty of hops, citrus and a small sweetness. Nice.

I tasted this beer at the Tall City Invitational last Saturday in Midland, TX. Good Line is a Lubbock brewery that I had no previous experience with. My notes say the nose was nice, very hoppy and considerable citrus. The taste did not keep up with the scent. I found tastes of lime, hops and grapefruit. Not a lot I could determine to make this a NE style brew. Other IPAs at the tasting were more interesting.
