12 oz can bought at Total Wine in Santa Fe appropriately enough. My Buffalo Bayou tulip glass is ready, I open the can and tilt into the glass. The appearance is a curious, totally clear, light gold liquid completed by a persistent top of bright white foam. A faint scent, I get touches of citrus and grain. The taste leans towards an IPA, there is grass, some pine, limes, more of the grain and for some reason, a hint of melon. Slightly bitter and there is some depth in the sensation. Actually I am liking this beer considerably more than expected. Over 2000 ratings and this is my first Cold IPA and my first new style in a long time. Good introduction.

We were in Santa Fe about a week ago, not our first time to Cowgirl. We encountered the usual large seasonal happy hour crowd of tourists mostly on our visit. Our booth was in the patio because we had our dog along with us, no problem there. I had an Ex Novo IPA while my wife selected a mixed drink, both were fine. The tap selection is large with over 20 beers available. About half are local or Albuquerque breweries. The others are mostly western US breweries with Guinness Stout thrown in. Nice enough selection, nothing very challenging. The food was all right, service was decent for the business they were having and the beer was cold.

Vintage Quintine 2021 (Buffalo Trace BA) from Brasserie des Légendes (Irchonwelz, Belgium 🇧🇪)

A dark Belgian strong ale, one of my preferred styles. And it is Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel aged, only better. Let us see if my expectations are met. Using a tulip glass, I open the 33 cl bottle and pour. The body is brown-amber and the head shows a parchment tan color before settling promptly to a decent skim. I smell dark fruit, grain and a bit of booziness, all somewhat subtle. The taste is all right but blander than I hoped. Yellow plums, cereal, a bit of hard candy, malt, raisins and just a hint of the bourbon. A decent beer, unfortunately not one that pops with flavor.

Olde English 800 7.5 from Miller Brewing Company (Milwaukee, United States 🇺🇸)

This version of Eight Ball has the pluses of a 7.5% abv and a 42 oz bottle. The glaring negative is the plastic bottle. Otherwise this is one of my favorite beer-tasting malt liquors. Corn on the front end, sorta sweet, grainy, a dense feeling and potent befitting the higher alcohol content. Plenty of bang for the buck if you appreciate that sort of thing. Here’s some for the brothers who couldn’t be here with us.

I have a one pint can coming to me from the only legit beer shop in town. Another interesting label from Collective Arts, they do that well. My Cowtown snifter pulls duty this early evening, lift the tab on the shiny can and pour. Indistinct yellow-gold body finished by a healthy head of absolutely white foam. I smell oranges, tropical fruit and a hint of hops. Time now for a taste. Grapefruit mostly, pine, some tangerine, crackers, all with a malt backbone. More bitter than sweet and fairly dry. After going to a really good minor league baseball game with a long-time friend last night, I call this beer a slow pitch over the middle of the plate.

Olde Spanglish Malt Liquor from Second Street Brewery (Santa Fe, United States 🇺🇸)

Sampled at the Railyard location in Santa Fe. Interesting to find a malt liquor on tap anywhere these days. It served up a clear yellow-gold with a strong carbonation and very little of a white head. It smelled like your basic beer. The taste was not earth shaking, fairly basic too. Malt, grain and a touch of citrus. Nice effort for the style but still a malt liquor. Extra grace for being available as a draft. Purchased a second time on 10/22/25 on a cloudy, pleasantly decent late October afternoon in northern New Mexico, I have a few additional comments. The taste follows that of OE800 considerably including the name. The head this time is sizeable while remaining fully white also lacing considerably as I drink the glass down. The taste now reflects a bit of cardboard and also has a small corn sweetness much like 8 Ball. A better tasting this time, perhaps because it is not an end-of-the keg serving like the first time. Time also to up the score a touch.
