On our ramble through the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, we stopped at Old Talbott Tavern to have a Hot Brown, a local dining delicacy. I picked Cougar Bait Blonde to go with it, a cold pint pour. Not a bad tasting beer, there was straw, a bit of citrus, some maltiness and mineral-free water. I would take another one anytime.

We stopped in here on our way to our first bourbon tasting in Louisville. What a surprise, very nice inside. A large wrap-around bar as the centerpiece with many tables in the restaurant portion. Several taps, a number of cans on hand. I asked for a local IPA and got a quite decent one from Sixth Street Brewing. With Louisville being in Kentucky's bourbon country, there were displayed many bottles of high-level bourbon, several I had only heard of but never seen. Certainly ones I could not afford to buy a drink of. But I did have a nice cold beer.

The one beer to drink before commencement of the Bourbon Trail in Louisville. I was served a 12 oz can at a really nice restaurant/bar just in front of our reservation at Bardstown Distillery. A decent yellow-gold liquid with a modest heard of completely white foam. I tasted a nice intro of hops and pine needles, malt, grapefruit and cut grass. Not a bad brew.

A 25 oz can bought today at a convenience store in Frankfort, KY on our Bourbon Trail trip. No glass, no paper bag, just drinking out of the can. I taste sweet corn, grain, water and a spare hint of citrus. Actually a pretty fair beer for the style, tasty, no complaint from me.

This imperial stout came to me from Half Time. Wanted it because: 1. Brewed by Three Floyds 2. Barrel aged 3. Coconut 4. Rather potent. Let us see how all that works out. Snifter ready to go, I make the pour. Dark brown, just a shade short of black completed by a minimal touch of khaki tan foam, plentiful carbonation fortunately. I smell dark chocolate, roast, grain and perhaps a whiff of coconut. The taste is quite different, the scent much expanded and really fine. First off, the sensation is thick, rather viscous. Then comes chocolate and coconut, some nuts and figs. Reminds me of an Almond Joy from back in the day. Very sweet, a small amount of bitterness. Oh yes, here comes the bourbony alcohol too. If I have a complaint, it is the insincere, toss-off label. This is a sincere imperial stout, impressive, my best in a long time in a style I put near the top.

A beer Iโ€™ve had before, thought it had been rated. It appears not. This is a 2025 edition 12 oz bottle purchased at Mr. Tโ€™s across town recently. I pull the cap and lift into my chilled ABGB tulip glass. The appearance is a clear gold liquid topped by a thin skim of ice white foam. The nose is pine, straw and syrup. The taste far exceeds the smell, I get dankness, pine resin, plenty of malt, varnish and some dried apricot sweetness. Quite good. No lack of a thick sensation in this one and moderately bitter. Also good. I call this a high level IPA.

The 12 oz bottle I have came from the Total Wine in the Heights a few months ago. My Great Heights snifter is in place, I tilt the bottle into the glass. Super dark brown body with a slender cover of khaki tan foam. Take a big sniff of the pour and get dark chocolate, grain and a bit of booze. I have a drink. Oh my, this is quite good, the first imperial porter for me in a long time and it was worth the wait. Very thick and very boozy, I like it. Bakers chocolate, scorched dark bread, a subtle amount of coffee, alcohol, a hint of caramel, something earthy and enough blackberries to rate a mention. Saint Arnold can kick it with their Bishop's Barrel and Divine Reserve beers, glad I got this one. Thanks Brian.
