For some reason I expected Herout to have a swish, smart set-up with a big shiny customer shop, perhaps a grand manor or something, so it was somewhat of a surprise to see a more rustic, small-scale operation in the small hamlet of Auvers. Very small space for maybe 5 cars at the rear up a steep ramp. Shop is quite small, but showcases quite a large range of Herout, certainly more than I thought they produced, with all manner of experimental barrel-aged editions. Prices are keen so be prepared, though Herout are quite dependable. A few old bottles from their early years on the shelves, old promotional posters.

330ml bottle from Noz. Pours a slightly unclear peach colour, stable white foam. Pleasant gently caramelised cidre but not detecting much in the way of hibiscus, soft scuzzy tannin on the close. Not bad.

75cl bottle. Misty golden yellow pour. Tastes a little waxy, subtle cheese.. dry sharp apple fruit drifting in on the finish. Naturally fermented feel, initially seems like an acquired taste but does become more likeable as you journey through.

75cl bottle from the producer. Pours a very pale misty yellow, fine spritz. Curiously citrussy and acidic, almost seems like it's been made with a citrus fruit, a hint of lime perhaps.. slight minerality. Uses apples traditionally used for patisseries, though the flavour profile doesn't conjure up sweet apple fruit. Quite delicate and very different for a French cidre.

330ml bottle from Noz. Pours a hazed deep amber, large off-white head. Malty aroma. Has a good chili kick that settles a little, full-bodied amber malt dominates, moderate Citra hop adding a little balance, generally ok.

330ml bottle from Labierotek, Dunkerque. Pours a hazed flanders red brown, loose bubbles atop. Excellent Cote du Rhone barrel influence from the start, very well defined with a biting acidity, good nutty bitterness and soft wild undertone. More flanders sweetness would've been welcome though.
