Map 40 is a Belgian-style stout blended with cold-brewed coffee from Speckled Ax. Black in body with a tan, reddish-tinged head, this beer’s aroma is strong in coffee and light in roasted grain. Brewed with dark chocolate malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, and brown malt. A light nuttiness accompanies tastes of chocolate, raisin, and a resounding coffee note that weaves its way throughout. This is a rich, creamy stout with a clean finish.

12 oz. bottle. Deep brown / black color. Really great aroma of roasted coffee bean, chocolate, and easy vanilla. The flavor has a rich roasted coffee, with a nice creamy mouthfeel and a dry texture. Love the mouthfeel. Delightful!

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. Bottled 1/11/2018. Dark brownish black with thin tan head. Aromas of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, malt, some Belgian yeast and dark fruit. Tastes of coffee, roasty notes, malt, Belgian yeast, a little dark fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. Pretty good.

Draught at EBF, 2/3/17.
Dark black body shows good clarity and a light-tan head atop that shows moderate to moderately-strong retention.
Coffee adds plentiful roastiness in the nose as black pepper, prunes and raisins follow suit bulking up the fruitiness here. Cocoa, light ash and vanilla help dry and balance while the malts add only light hints of honey-caramel. No alcohol or flaw.
Straightforward notes of fruity, lightly earthy coffee comprise the force of the beer, as they seem intended to. Fruity esters from the yeast mix with prune, vanilla and chocolate derived from the malts while sugars are well-attenuated but still balance the bitter/acid notes well. Tight carbonation is low and pleasing, allowing the coffee and other dark fruit notes to concentrate on the finish. Very well-made; would expect nothing less from Allagash. They’ve been really killing the dark beers lately.
