German Style Sour Ale

Few beer styles can match the delicate, sparkling character of the classic Berliner Weisse, with its light body and tart palate. It’s said that Napoleon’s troops referred to it as “The Champagne of the North,” high praise for beer, coming from Frenchmen. With Berliner Weisse, we pay tribute to the style, while giving it a distinctively American twist. Bright and thirst-quenching, the beer is enlivened by soft lactic notes.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 6/23/2018. Pours lightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big sour/tart lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, and pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour/tart lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate lactic tartness, and light spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, and pale/wheat malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness balance, and no puckering flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tartness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, and moderately bready/grainy/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is an outstanding Berliner weisse. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, and pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink; with the mellowly lactic/acidic finish for the style. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Perfectly balanced Lacto/yeast complexity and pale/wheat malts against acidity. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example.

Bottle. A- Lemon, lactic acid, dusty, A- Gold color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Mild funk, tart, slightly salty, sour, lemon, yogurt. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- An old bottle, almost 8 months passed the best by date. Still holds up alright. Typically one might think of this as a refreshing beer post lawnmowing. I for change, think it's a refreshing beer post blizzard snow shoveling. Either way, it's like the grown man's gatorade. Not bad but probably better fresh.

12oz bottle. My attempt to keep ticking Blvd. Golden color, clear, head dissipates quickly. Its very much a wheat beer with some light acidity and sourness, as opposed to most recent versions of the style. Just tart easy drinking wheat.

Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a mostly clear orange-gold with a finger of foam. Nice grainy nose with lemon zest and grass. Scratchy carbonation and grainy palette. A touch of yogurt and grain husks towards the finish. Lightly tart and salty finish. Pretty mild and easy drinking.

~14 oz Tulip draft at Martin City Brewing Company The Pub in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is golden, mostly clear with a small white head. The aroma is softly lactic sour, along with some cherry fruit. The taste is the faint, softly tart vinegar with sour cherry fruit and hints of wheat grain in the back. Gets tarter as it warms. The palate is light bodied with soft carbonation and the lingering soft lactic tart finish. Solid, well constructed Berliner.
