Black the RIPA is a Black Rye India Pale Ale style ale. We brew it using a goodly amount of Canterbury pale ale malt as a base to which we add a blend of speciality barley malts. We then ‘Rye it up’ with malted Rye and a selection of exotic Rye speciality malts to yield a beer with great depth, body, and subtle unique flavours. To ‘Blacken’ it we incorporate a special chocolate malt, which is de-husked so it imparts the dark hue without any of the associated burnt and acrid notes of a stout or porter.
Next, for the IPA part, we use a generous amount of New Zealand grown hops- both Kiwi and American varieties - throughout the boil and in the hopback. To finish it, and add the last blast of flavour and aroma, we dry hop in the fermenter with another generous blend of Kiwi hops.
The result, a dark, flavoursome IPA full of fruit, flower, and citrus with just a hint of earthy spice.

Missed rate from 19.2.2016. Uncontrollable beige head sat on a totally black still body. Massive hop aroma - huge! Quite thick on the palate with a prickly feel. Full on hops flavours with a rye background. Citrus, earthy, slightly metallic, lemon pith - very clean on the palate. Absolutely fantastic beer

Shared bottle. Pours almost black with a foamy tan head. Aroma is a bit subdued, with some malt and rye notes. Taste is more pronounced with rye, roasted malt, earth, plenty of dark chocolate, citrus, and pine. Very good.

Bottle at Hundholmen, Bod. The colour is deep dark reddish brown to black with a beige head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, coffee beans, dark chocolate, grass and rye bread. Lots of pine the flavour along with grapefruit, grass and with ash and dark chocolate in the background. Has a slick mouth feel, medium bitterness and heavy bitterness. Both well hopped and roasted, but the latter is losing the battle. Very tasteful and a little bit unbalanced.

Draft at Craft Beer Rising 2014 - London. Pours clear, dark brown with a creamy, tan head. The nose holds burnt bread, pine, earth. Light sweet flavour with big torched earth character, more ash, burnt pine, charred malts. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with robust bitterness, more earth, baking cocoa, scorched pine. Not bad, but too ashy.

50cl bottle from Pipetown Traders pours a murky black with some creamy, tan head. Nose has a lot of toast, rubber, citrus peel, heavy pine, soap, bread crust. Flavor is sweet with malt and dark chocolate, rubbery, soapy, dried orange peel. Full bodied, bitter finish.
