Hippophaes - Sea Buckthorn
Lemons may be sharp, but often lacks depth. Blackcurrants carry a sweetness that remind you of childhood. Sea buckthorn is different. It's wild, acidic, ancient. At our experimental microbrewery with help from our friends at Solo, we turned this vibrant, tart fruit into liquid gold!
Hippophaes Nectar is a 6% ABV fruit juice for grown-ups, brewed with heaps of sea buckthorn berries. Expect explosive tropical citrus, passionfruit and overripe pineapple notes, volcanic minerality and a bolt of electric acidity. The finish is long, dry and sharp, like licking volcanic rock! Can, huge thanks Fin&Loz! Shared with Hrabren and Ogi. Opaque lovely orange-golden body, no head. GI-bloody-NORMOUS aroma of sea buckthorn as it's poured out, salty, buckthorn-fecal, berry, lactic. Lean, dry salty tart berry taste. I still don't get the appeal of sea buckthorn except maybe in something already wild, and I'm not sure I ever will. Still, technically well made and nice to try. Think this one has some bug that dried it out some more. Maybe even not.

0.44 l can thanks to Marko, shared with Ogi and him. Hazy bright orange, minimal head. Aroma is ripe fruit, ripe berries, soft bretty notes, hints of lychee and tangerine. Flavour is ripe and fermenting fruit again from the sea buckthorn, hints of ripe citrus, earthy notes and a touch of Brett. Medium body, high carbonation, soft tartness, soft mineral touch, a herbal hint, dry finish. Quite refreshing.

Can courtesy of Kostas, Kykao brewery which arrived about 15mins before we left home on Thursday. Drinking this sat outside Frank at Camping Leutasch Austria, Saturday 16th August 2025. Pours looking every bit like a glass of orange juice, slim white ahead atop. Tart and zappy, a little overipe cape gooseberry, also passion fruit. Not as dry as description hints at but it is a little. This is not totally my cup of tea but I can see the appeal.
