Hippophaes - Sea Buckthorn
Lemons may be sharp, but often lacks depth. Blackcurrants carry a sweetness that remind you of childhood. Sea buckthorn is different. It's wild, acidic, ancient. At our experimental microbrewery with help from our friends at Solo, we turned this vibrant, tart fruit into liquid gold!
Hippophaes Nectar is a 6% ABV fruit juice for grown-ups, brewed with heaps of sea buckthorn berries. Expect explosive tropical citrus, passionfruit and overripe pineapple notes, volcanic minerality and a bolt of electric acidity. The finish is long, dry and sharp, like licking volcanic rock! Can courtesy of Kostas, Kykao brewery which arrived about 15mins before we left home on Thursday. Drinking this sat outside Frank at Camping Leutasch Austria, Saturday 16th August 2025. Pours looking every bit like a glass of orange juice, slim white ahead atop. Tart and zappy, a little overipe cape gooseberry, also passion fruit. Not as dry as description hints at but it is a little. This is not totally my cup of tea but I can see the appeal.
