Solas pours bright red with a white foam. The nose is a melody of New World hops which stand up to the malty backbone. The taste is medium bodied with a moderate bitterness, tonnes of hops and a caramel lick.

On cask at Leaping Salmon JDW in Berwick upon Tweed - Rich amber body with a long lasting white head. Nose is predominantly light citrus with nothing really stand out. Taste hits with a good bitter hop kick and a lasting citric afterthought. Really good looking and tasting beer.

Hazy red - amber beer, small pale cream coloured head. Palate is airy and light with good fine carbonation. Light airy malt. Very nice hops - light orange and orange marmalade. The malt turns slightly creamy. Whisper of lemon. Smooth finish. Not a shouty beer but it hangs together beautifully and is super drinkable. One of those bottles that just vanish before you realise it. Fine beer!

On tap @ the Scran and Scallie. Appearance - amber with a nice head. Nose - biscuits, citrus perhaps some apples. Taste - biscuit and apples and some lemon on the finish. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet crunchy texture and a fairly refreshing finish. Overall - this is in the direction of a bitter in my opinion. A decent drop though.

Cask at Red Squirrel. Pours copper with a good white head. Aromas of red fruit and toffee caramel bready maltiness. Good bitterness, but I could take more in the style, malts come through nicely. Medium to light body, flat carbonation. Good finish. Enjoyed this.

Cask at Guildford Arms, Edinburgh. It pours clear reddish-brown with a medium white head. The nose is caramel, wood polish, red berry and sponge. The taste is smooth, caramel, wood, red berry, touch of jam and brown bread with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Smooth, easy going stuff. Ok.

Bottle from the brewery. Murky amber body with a thick off-white head that slowly fades. Great lacing. Aroma of caramel and red fruits. Lovely balance of malt and hops - sweet caramel, wood and red fruit flavours. Nice yeastiness. Medium body with a very oily texture. Soft carbonation. I’m not sure if this is strong, bitter or hoppy enough to be classed as an IPA, but who cares - this is delicious and has a lovely cask conditioned quality to it. Dare I say, Kernel-esque?
