Oak and currant nose with sweet malt accents. Cloudy ochre, full of floating sediment, no head. Sweet and hot, mouthfeel is fizzy, full body. Dates are predominant. Bark and stems are also present. Too much dates and no hops, not my kind of barleywine at all.

Draft. Hazy golden color. Aroma of lightly spiced butterscotch. Taste is similar with a bit of toffee and toast. Nice stuff.

A hazed dark amber ale with a thick brown head. In aroma, intense caramel malt with fruity esters, light soy notes, alcohol, vanilla beans. In mouth, a cloyingly sweet caramel, dark fruits, restrained bitterness, maple wood, alcohol, too much in your face.Insanity! Bottle shared with GRM and ProbstK, August 5 2011. Thanks Karl.

Whole Foods- P st, DC 4-pack ($16): Pours a darkish amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is of whiskey, vanilla, whiskey barrel, whiskey, and a whole lot of sugary malts. Taste kind of oscillates between bitterness and sweetness. Leaves a heavy vanilla/whiskey aftertaste that is actually one of the really nice things about this beer. Unlike most people rating this beer, I did not think (nor do I think, since I am still drinking this) that this beer is overly sweet. The maltiness is intense, but not through the roof and nor is this beer exceedingly thick. In any case, it is a quintessential sipper, rather than a quaffer. My girlfriend seldom takes this last statement to heart.

12 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours a hazy dark coppery amber with a small ring of beige head. Aroma of candied sugar, oak, vanilla and caramel. The barrels have turned the monolithic cloying sweetness of Blithering Idiot into a moderately oaked version with slightly less candied sugar, more vanilla, some chocolate notes and lots of caramel. Still intensely sweet, though not as boozy. Marginally better than BI.

7/9/2010 The thermostat outside say its 98 degrees, my window ac is having trouble keeping the living room in the 80’s. You know what would really hit the spot right about now is a big thick oak aged barleywine. :) Pours a dark orange amber that borders on brown. I coaxed a smallish head into my tulip, but she receded quickly to form a ring around the top of my glass. Smells of oak caramel and vanillin right up front. Subtle but lovely bourbon on the nose. Slight twinge of higher alcohols mixed with some dark cherries or prunes, or both. Taste is sweet upfront with the oak balancing some fruit, caramel, and melanoids. About midway and into the finish the higher alcohols take over and remind you that this one is 11+ abv. The finish is rather dry with that lingering caramel’d alcohol taste. Light carbonation, medium body with a dry finish, sweet syrupy mouthfeel. I like this one. Flavor and aroma are excellent, but I think I like it more with age on it because right now the alcohol is a bit too present. I’m going to stash some of these away and re-review in the future.

Bottle from Charleston Beer Exchange. Pours quite ruddy with a slight, transient creamy beige head. Aroma is quite oak, perhaps with a hint of vanilla. Med body. Mild carb. It’s very pleasant. Malt and a little dark fruit balanced by bitter. All in all it’s a very oaky ale. Delicious.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 1/2/11

Aroma: The aroma is boozy, some fruity notes, a little wood, caramel, and a touch of vanilla
Appearance: A dark reddish color with a smallish beige head and a little bit of lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste is kind of sugary and bourbon boozy, with some brandy-like qualities too
Palate: The body of this beer is fairly full with a good amount of boozy heat to it
Overall Impression: This one is definitely one of those beers I've had before, so I'm surprised I've never rated it. I figured I should pick up a bottle and give it a review. This is a solid brew. Definitely on the boozy side, definitely on sugary side, and not lacking in body. This is a well-made beer especially for fans of bourbon barrel aging.

This Barley wine poured a cloudy, deep orange colour with a fast living, off white head. Poured very cloudy. To the nose, there was scents of ripe fruit, alcohol, paint, ginger and other spices. First taste had a very thick mouthfeel. Very sweet but not overpowering. Flavours of caramel, alcohol, rum, irish cream and raisen. finish is very creamy with the irish cream flavour lasting with the rum flavours. Very complex beer!
