Insanity, 11.1% ABV, is made by aging our Blithering Idiot Barleywine Ale in whiskey barrels. The barrel aging imparts an additional level of complexity to an already intense malt profile by adding a combination of vanilla, oak and whiskey notes.

bottle pours light ruby/brown with a medium off white head. Aroma is strong oak and sweet bourbon with light vanilla notes. Flavor is rich caramel notes, lots of barrel, oak, vanilla, sweet bourbon, creamy oat consistency. Very well done, this is an excellent sipper.

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark red, with lots of suspended particles. The head is large and off-white, but falls quickly. The aroma is almost entirely fruit and tannin, like a red wine. The flavors are much more complex, with lots of malts, raisins, bananas, and apricots. The flavors from the bourbon barrel go well with barleywine. There are flavors of oak, aged whiskey and vanilla, and a significant feel of heavy alcohol. The combination is smooth and powerful. The mouthfeel is very heavy, creamy, and warming from the alcohol. Overall, an amazingly heavy and tasty beer.

Bottle at home, thanks as ever to keepersj12. A murky brownish pour with minimal head. Nose revealed traces of caramel, vanilla, spices, dark fruit and brown sugar. Flavour was sweetish and had similar elements to the aroma with booze aplenty and notes of the oak barrels used. Pretty decent stuff, cheers Steve.

27th December 2008. Cloudy brown beer with an orange tint. No real head. Sweetich start - a little saccharine - mild caramel then vanilla oak and a definite spicy note at the end. Very slightly fruity. Complex but I could really do without the saccharine dryness.

Pours cloudy dark caramel color with off white head that doesn’t last. Aromas of vanilla and bourbon with some caramel. Sweet caramel and bourbon hit you up front. Vanilla and oak roll over your tongue in the finish. Full body with mild carbonation and a very nice creamy mouthfeel. Very pleasant after dinner sipper.

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a light tan head. Malt and caramel aroma. Malt flavor with light dark fruit, light yeast, and light oak. Bourbon more in background. Medium bodied. Caramel and a light nuttiness lingers with light dark fruits and a bit of yeastiness. Some alcohol present. Nice complexity.
