South Pacific Pale Ale
Kipling was the first UK beer to use the exquisite Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand. We brew this as a SMASH (Single Malt and Single Hop) using the heritage Maris Otter as a base malt which works to allow the complex flavour of this hop to really shine through. There is a grassy, grapefruit character on the nose, followed by passionfruit and mango. It finishes with a balanced and thirst-quenching bitterness.

Pours a completely clear and very pale yellow color, topped with a decent and solid white head which leaves nice lacing. Aroma is pleasantly fruity, some tropical fruits which I can’t really identify, but very nice. Also notes of hops are well present. Starts with some fruity feel, followed by medium hoppy bitterness and some pine notes, with some fruity notes again in the finish. Very nice, very drinkable. Just great.

Bottle:Pale greenish golden, small, but stable white lacy head; bitter-sweet nose of exotic fruits, mainly citrussy; moderate and clean bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied, a bit fizzy; lingering citrussy and pale-malty finish. O.K. and refreshing, but surely not the best Thornbridge product…

Shared bottle at Mi2 at Cardinal 09.02.15. Very pale, clear yellow. Aroma of lemongrass and lime. Perhaps a slight hint of CP. Similar taste, with lime marmelade and succade. Medium bitterness in long aftertaste.

Cloudy straw yellow color with big head. Aroma of tropical fruits, a hint of pine. Taste begins with a bit of pines, then the tropical fruits take over. Low carbonation, little malt backbone, and light body. A superb Pale Ale, just a bit too light for an over-the-top rating.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green, 20/12/14 ... sure I’ve had this plenty of times before and didn’t even realise I hadn’t rated it until I took a double check ! Clear golden with a decent white covering. Nose is passionfruit, pine notes, light skunky hops, grapefruit. Taste comprises floral notes, grapefruit, tangerine, citric sherbets, passionfruit, mandarin. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with juicy hop bitterness. Solid cask APA.

Bottle from Cambridge Wine Merchants (Mill Road). Straw colour, clear. Impressive but short-lived white head. Decent fruity aroma: citrus, pineapple, lemon drops. Well-balanced taste: bitter but not too much so. Turns to a luscious lemony sour-bitter at the end. Nice touch. Just the right amount of carbonation.
