Red Agnes

Schramm’s Red Agnes is more finely balanced and perceivably less sweet than her Scottish cousin, Black Agnes. Red currants provide deep floral aromatics, a fruitier initial impression, more focused acidity, and a stunning cardinal hue. Lighter and more quaffable than Black Agnes, this mead is dangerously drinkable with a delicately balanced acidity which allows the honey and fruit to sing in harmony together.

Inky purple nose with tons of cherries, raspberries, red currants, honey and sweet nose. Very deep. Slightly tart. Slightly boozy. Very sweet but balanced with tartness. Excellent fruit character. Love this stuff.

Bottle. Hazy red color with no head. Aroma is super red currant, vine, honey. Taste is redcurrant juice, tannic, berry skin, honey sweetness, lightly nutty touches of oxidization. Viscous oily mouthfeel, lightly tannic. Good, but I preferred Black Agnes.

Insane! Lt tart red currants/skin/cherry/rasp/straw/cranberry/red grape/wine/citrus/floral/brown sugar/honey; lt vanilla/cocoa/herbal/pepper. Sweet/full body. Slight acidic/tangy/tannic drying. No cloying. Mild increasing warmth. Dangerously smooth.

Clear, perfect ruby colour. Red fruit, sweet viervruchten jam, boozy, but also some fruitacids. Sweet, honey very outspoken. The finish has red fruit and again a hint of fruitacids. Very sticky, but the fruit diluted it already a good bit. Nice with the fruit, but the Polish meads remain a class apart.

Intensiver fruchtiger Beginn von Johannisbeere und Honig. Süffig, wenig Alkohol, die intensive Fruchtigkeit bleibt konstant, wenig kräutrig, Himbeeren. Dann wieder Honig, komplex, trockener Hintergrund. Lecker. 11/12/12/12/13/12

A light burgundy red mead with aroma of sweet raspberry jam, grapes, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity raspberry jam with light acidity, alcohol warmth, light cork character, very nice and complex. Bottle at meadery.

Batch 1 bottle shared by Brian on 12/9/17.
Clear red raspberry-strawberry maroon color.
Strawberry-raspberry and light bubble gum, kinda on the boozy side, which is unusual for Schramm's. Definitely some sugar depth in the nose, as well, which creates some balance with the moderate acidity.
Strong notes of strawberry and moderately acidic raspberry mix with very warming alcohol and rich honey. Piquant acidity creates balance but it's a bit waxy, peppery and just all-around not very polished or cohesive. Sweet, of course. Perhaps it's just not a great candidate for aging? That seems very unlikely but whatever the case, this wasn't up to Schramm's usual high standards, IMHO.
