(Draught at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 25 Feb 2017) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with caramel, dried fruit, figs, raisins and roasted malt. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, nuts, caramel and a sweetish finish with a fairly low bitterness. Full body, sweet. Tasty and rounded, but overly sweet. Works well in moderate doses. Quite nice.

Draught at Foeders in Amsterdam. Dutch barleywine-like quad with lightly lacing, off-white, medium thick, moussy head and hazy orangey amberish robe with ochre blonde hue, clearly a lot paler than the average quadrupel and effectively looking much more barleywine-like. Aroma also leans more towards (English) barleywine than towards quad, with impressions of fresh orange juice, fermenting pear, wet hay, strawberry wine, dough, Grand Marnier, red apple peel, biscuit, warm cake. Fruity onset, vivid mango, ripe pear and strawberry sweetness with a mildly sourish redcurrant touch, medium carbo, rounded caramelly malt sweet body with a very subtle toasted bitterishness somewhere, warming finish with lingering fruit esters and orange flavors alongside warming, cognac- and liqueur-like but non-astringent (though still heating) alcohol and a herbal hop bitter accent; residual sugary sweetness prevails. Mouthfeel is probably closer to quad (not very vinous, ’fluffy’ and quite strongly carbonated) but in every other respect, this is clearly a barleywine; pleasant dessert beer in any case, probably with good ageing potential, so I’d love to taste this from a bottle with a few years of cellaring behind it.

Tap @ van Moll, 5 cl sample. Slight hazy copper color, short frothy head. Aroma of some spices, caramel, bit raisin. Soft sweetness in taste, bit spicy. Just what you would expect of a quad I guess. Well brewed, but I prefer this kind of beer from bottle I think. From tap it is less powerful and feels more like "13 in een dozijn".
