A flagship beer produced by our dear friends at Tired Hands, one of the first breweries to set the Hazy East Coast IPA game on fire! Only this time Alien Church has a Jolly Pumpkin twist!

This Hoppy Sour Hazy IPA is overflowing with 8 different hop varieties including 3 different Cascade varietals. Aromas of grapefruit pith, lemon, and funk in the nose to start, fading into tropical passion fruit and guava. Notes of lemon, lime, pith, and sweet pineapple pair perfectly with the Brett funk, moderate bitterness, and dry finish.

Alien Church

I can’t remember where I first met Jean and Julie. Anchorage, perhaps?

But I do remember the first beer we brewed together.

A Jolly Pumpkin version of his most popular Alien Church.

We planned to debut the JP Alien Church next to his Alien Church at a tap takeover, in May. Hoping to create mass consumer confusion, and countless breakings of unwritten paradigms. We rubbed our palms together and laughed like only evil geniuses can laugh.

I don’t think we ever created the mass hysteria we intended.

But we love the beer, and continue to brew it, mostly for us, but also in tribute to the fine folks at Tired Hands!

Here is the latest extraordinary rendition. Hope you enjoy!

Hoppy Sour Hazy IPA

Cheers & Mahalo plenty!

A hazed blonde ale with a thin white head. In aroma, nice fruity malt with light Brett, light lactic notes, nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with light Brett, light lactic notes, cork character, very nice and complex. On tap at JP Detroit.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/29/2017. Slight gusher upon opening. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy medium golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lightly tart lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, red apple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, white wine, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, oak, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of biscuit, peppercorn, pine, leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, fruity/funky/spicy yeast, oak, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, red apple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, white wine, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, oak, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of biscuit, peppercorn, pine, leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light herbal/grassy/citrus peel bitterness, Brett tartness, and peppery yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, red apple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, white wine, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, pepper, pine, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, oak, cracker, bread, light leather/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, fruity/funky/spicy yeast, oak, and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance; and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tart/bitter/spiciness and carbonation. High carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, creamy/grainy, and fairly sticky/acidic/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Touch of lingering resins. Zero warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is an excellent sour IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, fruity/funky/spicy yeast, oak, and bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/spicy/drying finish. Never had the base beer, but definitely a unique take on the style. Great balance of juicy/vibrant/light dank hops and classic JP funky Brett complexity; nice oak presence and malt/oat backing. A very enjoyable and well made offering as expected. Jolly Pumpkin has been making a lot of sour IPAs recently, seems to be the new thing for them.

750 mL bottle. My notes are particularly brief, but they indicate it pours golden with a rockey white head. Sour grapefruit aroma. Flavor is also sour and grapefruit, but I really enjoyed it.

Draft into a snifter showing cloudy yellow with about three fingers of clean white foam. The nose shows brett and tart citrus notes. The palate is lightly carbonated and full bodied. Flavors of orange/lemon zest with no tartness. A lot of very light bretty funk but not very harmonious. These flavors do not come together very well.
