Prairie Rue is a collaboration that was born out of years of admiration and friendship between the founders of Prairie Artisan Ales and The Bruery. Using hops chosen for their lemony and floral aroma plus 100% Munich malt, this farmhouse ale was barrel-fermented in oak with several strains of brettanomyces, revealing pleasant wafts of prairie grains, orange blossom honey and lemony-floral funk. A refreshing, crisp bready backbone is complimented by a balance of citrus hop flavors and woody, earthy flavors and spice characters. When thinking about this beer, it’s hard to say whether it’s more of a Prairie beer or a Bruery Terreux beer. And that’s exactly how collaborations should be.

Bottle. Pours hazy amber, medium beige head, dissipates fairly slowly, good lacing. Aroma is oak, brett, a bit fecal perhaps; biere de garde like nose, field grass. Farmland. Flavor is light tart medium funk, oak tannin. Medium body, loads of funk on the finish.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is somewhat fruity with some cherry pie and stone fruit notes. Belgian esters with light phenolic notes, Moderately malty with some caramel, raisin and toasted bread. Some light wine notes with hints of oak. Faint honey and citrus notes. Pours a hazy, copper red, amber color with a large, thick, slightly tan head that slowly, but steadily recedes to the edges where it lingers for just a bit. No lacing or legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with a light acidity. Moderate malt notes with some caramel, toasted bread, nuts and raisins. Medium light bitterness and hints of oak and oak tannins. Light phenolics with an herbal, grassy character. Hints of citrus. Some stone fruit notes with overripe pear and red apple. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright saison, but a boring one as well. The funk and yeast character is a bit boring. Fairly malt forward as well.

750ml bottle pours a hazy amber with some creamy, off white head. Nose has passion fruit and blood orange, mild fruit roll up. Flavor follows with the fruit roll up, berry, passion fruit, blood orange, some celery. Finishes lightly sweet. Others in this series have missed, but this was decent.

Location: 750 ml bottle from the , 3/9/16

Aroma: Sweeter aroma of bready malts and orange, bit of grain as well, and mild oak notes
Appearance: Clear amber-orange color with a thin, sheeting head and mild lacing
Flavor: Flavor is sweeter than expected as well, lighter bitterness, oak on the close, slightly tannic
Palate: The body is a bit lighter than expected, soft enough carbonation, lightly dry / tannic close
Overall Impression: Drinking this on the patio enjoying abnormally warm early March weather in NJ. Shorts weather on March 9th is something worth celebration with a very interesting beer out of the fridge. This is one of those beers where my thoughts on it changed quite a few times throughout the course of drinking it. Most of the time I feel like I can get a really strong impression off of a small sample, but occasionally, a beer like this shows up where I'm 65% of the way through a 750 before I have any idea how I feel about it. The flavors really develop. I was headed for a score in the 3.3-3.5 range after 8 ounces of a bottle, after a full 750 I'm scoring it a good bit higher.

On tap at the brewery. It pours a clear, light amber orange color with a small khaki head. The aroma is toasted and lightly funky with some pleasant notes of fig and plum. The flavor is lightly tart with some plum and toasted malt, hints of funkiness in the finish. Light acidity. No bitterness. The mouthfeel was light to medium with an oily texture. Kinda interesting stuff actually.
