A mixed culture solera style beer gently hopped with Motueka and fermented in red wine barrels creating layers of flavour and enabling it to take on the funky farmhouse tones, after years maturing, this beer is thirst quenchingly dry with lemony tart flavours. Bottle: Nose is banana, cloves, sherbert, and a big dose of lemon sherberts, bubble gum - inviting and appealing. (I’m marking it down because it has nothing at all to do with what this beer tastes like....) Taste is full bodied brett: earthy, dry, leathery oak tones, light tart green apple tones, wheat, a little clove, very yeasty, a little lemon and sweetness in the finish and an emerging bubble gum down the stretch. Mouthfeel is light and suppable. It’s a decent beer, but the nose and taste seem irreconcilable and badly mismatched. I am really glad to see British brewers doing things with Brett, and while this is only good(ish), it’s much better than another IPA. I hope to see more of this and improvement through fettling, and I think this would be an interesting summer drink. Edit: As this beer warmed the extremes of the nose, evened out and some of the more earthy brett notes emerged, and the sweetness in the back end of the palate became stronger. It’s not quite as uneven a beer as a first suggested. I’ve warmed to it a lot, as well. It’s a really nice sessionable beer.

Bottle. Beermoth, Manchester. Hazy, pale gold. Bubbly, lasting, white head. Lemon. Lemon sorbet. Light Brett. Spicy, fruity, biscuit malt balancing out the fresh. Taste is zesty, spicy, light dry, light tart, and light bitter. Airy palate. Finishes light sweet, then dry, and closing light bitter. Very nice.

Sample on tap at What’s Brewing Beer Festival, Stavanger. Brett barrel aged. ABV 4.8%. Hazy golden colour, white head. Lovely farmhouse / brett aroma. Brett flavour too, distinctly spicy / peppery, with decent hops throughout. One of the better beers of the festival.
