It comes but once a year. Our homage, in spirit, to the iconic California triple IPAs we fell in love with many moons ago. A formidable yet ever-so-beckoning brew to help us weather the calendar’s coldest stretch. Talking Backwards.

This is the tenth iteration of Talking Backwards, and while we’ve made some tweaks over time, the fundamentals of our annual triple IPA remain the same. It’s constructed almost entirely from a split of Britain’s premium Maris Otter and some good ol’ pilsen malt. And it’s hopped with the holy trinity of Pacific Northwest varietals: almighty Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe.

2025 Talking Backwards received a Simcoe kettle addition, then doses of Citra Cryo and Mosaic during whirlpool. After primary fermentation, we dry-hopped this 10% triple IPA with a symphony of all three hops. We’ll never not be in awe of the magic conjured by this cultivar trio: tangerine, melon, passion fruit, and berry, balanced by a touch of pine and dank resin.

And befitting the decade milestone, we’ve given cans a fresh new look. Just a little start to our 10th year festivities…

Super hazy bright glowing golden body with a very nice tan and off-white two centimetre tall head that stays afloat for a long time over the 90 per cent opaque raw honey body. Aroma of oranges, mangoes, papaya, light oats, some noticeable sugars and a strong alcohol scent, too. Full-bodied; Super rich oaty and wheat notes really bring out the pungency with oranges, mangoes and papaya quite strong as well, with a deep crisp and resinous, sweet & fruity flavour throughout that does show a good deal of alcohol, but also a lot of sugars. Aftertaste is rich across the board with a deep tropical fruitiness here, with a lot of sweetness, almost at the cloying level, with bunches of oats making this feel like it's full-bodied throughout, and a lot of alcohol notes that show close to 9 per cent, but perhaps hiding a per cent. Overall, a nice, but quite rich beer throughout that has a very nice fruitiness, a lot of oat maltiness and bunches of residual sugar - great to have local, but be ready for how rich it is! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from The Perfect Pour in Elk Ridge, Maryland on 25-October-2022 for US$6,75, canned on 09-February-2022 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 23-May-2023.
