Sometimes it’s a side trip that makes the journey. During our last anniversary retreat to Belgium, brewmaster Peter Bouckaert embarked on a sensory excursion to find the perfect yeast strain for his next creation: Side Trip Belgian Pale Ale. A beer from Brouwerij Van Den Bossche led Bouckaert to the brewery’s family Belgian Style Pale Ale
Buffalo yeast strain, which they happily shared, and the foundation was set. Additions of Belgian Chateau Abbey and Cara Ruby malts from Castle Malting, the oldest malting plant in Belgium, as well as Belgian Magnum, Saphir and Target hops builds a bready, caramel-sweet wash with traces of stone fruits, and a balanced herbal bitterness for a pleasantly dry finish. Take a break from your journey with a Side Trip.

Bottle. I think this is a Belgian ale. Golden in color, slightly cloudy medium to large head some lace. Aroma and taste is spicy and flavorful like a Belgium ale. Nice beer, good job New Belgium.

Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Yeast and malt aroma. Yeast and malt flavor with light fruity esters and light herbal notes. Medium bodied. Fruity esters and malt linger with light yeast.

Crisp, ever so slightly hazy golden and copper coloured body with a thinnish, off-white head, only a quarter centimetre tall. Aroma of light belgian spicey yeast, some coriander seed, curacao, fennel seed and a bit of hay. Medium-bodied; Relatively dry with a nice grassy and herbal flavour with some noticeable alcohol throughout. Aftertaste shows more of the bitterness and depth with the dryness. Overall, a decent beer with a nice kick of the yeast and grain on the finish with a pleasant light hoppiness as well. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Clarendon (Arlington), Virginia on 20-January-2016 for US$1,67 sampled at home in Washington on 05-May-2016.

Draught @ DIA. Bright amber. Sweetish character with light plasticy Belgian yeast, vague bitterness but the malts and esters don’t have much development.
