The origins of Oatmeal Stout go back hundreds of years when oats were added to Stouts to promote a healthier image than other beers available during that time period. The unique blend of the oats and malts in Alaskan Stout produce a balanced, smooth beer with hints of coffee and caramel.

Sample at the Super Terrific Stout Tasting on Feb 16th. This brew is a brownish-black color with a medium light tan head that diminishes steadily. Patches of lacing on the glass. Toasted grain and malt aroma with a bit of coffee. Medium, smooth body with sweet malt, milk chocolate and mild coffee flavors. The finish is creamy and sweet with malt and light hops, and a bit of coffee in the aftertaste. Above average, although if Alaskan applied some of their Smoked Porter prowess to this beer it would be a lot better.

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a red shine under a brown head. The aroma is sweet mlaty with notes of caramel and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt, as well as medium notes of caramel. I find the body thin. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Degarth. Clear, dark brown with a reddish hue and a dense, beige head. Burned and a little chocolatey sweet aroma. Medium-bodied with sweet notes of hard roasted malts and a whiff of vanilla. Subdued bitterness. A little low in carbonation. 120108

A sweet oatmeal stout. Black in color. Some lactose sugar, and lightly roasted malt. A well made beer but I’m not crazy about the lactose.

Deep brown with dark ruby highlights and a small tan head. Roasted malts, coffee, molasses, oatmeal, cocoa, and some refreshing dark fruits. The flavor is a little harsh, not as inviting as the aroma implies. Burnt malts, molasses, bittersweet cocoa, and some oats. Smooth, full body with a definite biter finish. Solid, but the flavor isn’t as organized as I’d like.

Bottle: Very dark brown pour with large, frothy tan head and some moderate lacing. Literally looks like a perfect sweet stout. Nose is malt, light coffee, and roastiness. Taste is a very well balanced medley of cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, and molasses. No outstanding flavors, but a basic stout blend that is extremely well done.
