Special Release Series. Noir blends two signature brews of the Pacific Northwest: coffee and beer. This coffee milk stout combines roasted malts with smooth cold brewed coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters. A subtle sweetness from milk sugar (lactose) makes this beer reminiscent of the most satisfying cup of joe; distinctive and delectable.

Sample glass at Growler Garage, South Burlington, VT.
The appearance was black colored with a bar pour’s kind of barely a head. Rating adjusted accordingly.
The smell had a sweet milk chocolate over top of a light dark chocolate. Some vanilla runs in for the balance.
The taste had a damp sweetness of the previously mentioned flavors running into light anise/black licorice. The aftertaste and finish are the same.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation finishes nicely.
Overall, this is a nice milk/sweet stout that I would have again.

Bottle from Albertsons. Pours out a nice shade of ebony with a fairly thin head, small bits of lacing.. Faint aroma of chocolate and roast grains. Lactose sweetness is very subdued, tempering the normal stout bitterness. Finishes silky smooth, with a bit more sweetness.

Bottle: Very dark brown in color, topped with a thick finger of creamy tan head. Pretty decent sheets of lacing. The nose is absolutely stunning, if you like espresso and chocolate… it’s packed with both. I’m thinking chocolate covered coffee beans. The fresh flavorful coffee shines even more in the taste, minimally sweet with a light bitter finish. Espresso and faint cocoa, hint of vanilla. I love a good coffee beer and this is top notch.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out lactose notes, some subtle coffee and a little cocoa. Flavour is along the same lines, like a latte, with lactose and coffee notes upfront. Medium bodied and well-balanced. Not the most complex beer, but pretty well-balanced. Very nice.

22oz bomber pours with a nice dark brown body that has thin amber edges and supports a full tan head of foam. The aroma offers up a big dose of coffee roastiness as well as some dark roasted malts, a dash of burnt malts and then a bit of earthy maltiness. The taste begins with a full wide dark roasted coffee goodness that’s tempered nicely by some mild sweet malts that bring along a dash of chocolate and then the lactose twang. Behind the coffee notes are modest levels of dark roasted malts followed by a splinter of burnt maltiness. All around good flavor balance and depth as echoes of spicy hops are noticed here and there too.

Good to be #10. Bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of light chocolate and not so light coffee. Med + body. Flavor is very coffee, with smooth burnt malt and maybe not much, if any, chocolate. It’s bitter, but not quite dry. Good stuff.
